are we going to be financially browbeaten into accepting black boxes?

think we (motors ) should all get one, see who can rack up the most warning e-mails in a week.

my moneys on pmkeates :)

I'd be interested in one used purely to ascertain blame in the event of an accident.

Would I be interested in one monitoring every little thing? Absolutely not.

Theres flaws in this that will cause the rubbish we have on roads to get even worse.

For example lorry driver doing 40-50 on NSL A road. Car behind has black box, car behind him has black box and car behind him also has a black box. No one wants to overtake because black box says no. Result one massive long tailback behind lorry. This is bad enough already (My work place is right next to a lorry depot) but these boxes are going to make it worse.

What else can they monitor?

They monitor braking, turning and accelerating forces.

The units have an accelerometer in them that logs your driving characteristics.

I have been fitting quite a few unit's for insure-the-box and I-Kube..

any questions? fire away and I will do my best to answer them..

Might be good for getting NCB up, its not a bad idea to be sensible with a new car anyway imo
I only see a problem when its mandatory, anyone with 5ncb shouldnt need such things

Why would the box be saying no?

It serves plenty of purposes and has nothing to do with 1984, not least because it relates to companies, not government.

and how long till the insurance companies are forced (or willingly) share information with the police. Or worse, your insurance Co start fining you for every breach of the law you commit in terms of increased premiums, Imagine getting a letter from your insurance company saying due to your 3 breaches of speed limits last month your premiums have been incresaed by £100 these infractions have now been noted on the Insurance database and will remain there for 5 years.

Slippery slope fallacy.

bookmark this and revisit in 5 years time, Insurance companies are always looking for justification to increase premiums ie non fault accidents make you more likely to be a higher risk, whats to stop them stating quite feasibly that someone who speeds regularly and drives spiritedly is more likely to have an accident than Mr stick to the speedlimits regardless.

I can honestly see insurance companies insisting on black boxes or else you'll be charged a substancial premium over those with a black box, or perhaps another type of NCB a No Speeding bonus or similar.

But it's still illegal to drive over the local speed limit in order to overtake: that you were doing an overtake is not a defence.

Of course not, but everyone does and it is much safer, with such a box. You risk losing insurance or increased premiums. Hence you could get a big tailback.
