Dota 2 - Steam

I've been playing a lot, some random scottish guys added me and I've been playing with them. I added damien but he doesn't seem to like playing with others :P

I've sunk in over 100 hours... on a free game... which is in beta... on a single map... Safe to say I'm going to get it on release if its not free to play.

Cheers, I read the "Welcome to DOTA, You Suck" guide :).

Done one online match and a couple of practice matches against/with bots, don't really like the game tbh. I guess the impression I got from watching the occasional pro match during SC2 tournaments is how I actually feel about playing the game :p.

Oh well, didn't cost anything.

clartymarty, I have no idea when I signed up for the beta, was ages ago though.

I just don't really like the type of game, I've always been unsure about whether or not I'd like it. Watching video's made me think I wouldn't, which is why I'd never bothered trying LoL or HoN. But I've always thought I should try it out at some point to see if I feel different when playing it, I hate watching FPS games after all despite enjoying playing them :p.

Aw well lol I only signed up like last week after hearing about it lol because my friend got me into LoL, I do like it and I do play HoN but a lot of my friends play LoL. Just really want to play this game it sucks really bad. I am always looking on the net to see if I can get any more information lol.
 
Just like to point out prior, I'm a total Dota newbie, and new to the whole genre as well.

Played a few games, sucked so hard it wasn't even funny :p played a few more though and I think I'm getting the hang of it - helped a lot by finding a class I'm happy with. I picked the Necrolyte I think it's called? it seems very power at late game, early on it's a bit weak though.

Seems absolutely critical that I do the following, in order:

1. Buy a wand at the start, and a bunch of +3 Int items
2. Farm monsters as fast as possible for coin to get upgrades
3. Get a shoe, with the speed/attack upgrade
4. Replace my base wand with the better one, about 1.5k gold
5. Start replacing my +3 int items with +5 all attributes / +5 armor items.

Does that sound right? Also is there any way to ensure you get coin from monsters you're attacking? sometimes the NPC friendlies will just "steal" the last hit, so I get only experience and not any coin.
 
Necrolyte is an easy hero to play OK, but a hard hero to play really well. If you get good farm early you can easily carry a game. Build tanky and just spam your heal to stay alive and kill everyone who stands around you :D He has a bad last hit animation, so having int items early will help a lot.

I haven't played him since HoN, which had 2 really powerful items for a necrolyte which were core but aren't in DotA (Nome's Wisdom and Plated Greaves)

Bloodstone is good, Scythe of Vyse, Mekansm, Linken's and Shiva's are all good items on him, but entirely dependant on your farm as to whether you can get them or not. If I don't get good farm on the hero early I'll fall into a support role, getting items like drum, mek and lots and lots of wards :p

Also lol @Bloomfield. It sucks how so many people are getting into the beta who've never played a MOBA before and instantly won't like it, whilst people who've played DotA/HoN/LoL for a long time beforehand can't get in. If you got the 2 extra invites add some people you know who are interested in it and play together with them, it takes a LONG time to not be bad at the game but it's definitely worth it.

I don't get why Valve gave out keys as Winter Sale prizes. Someone who's never played the game before is going to be a useless beta tester as they'll have no idea what's meant to happen in the first place. Most of the people who play currently don't even visit the dev forums (dev.dota2.com)

Thanks for the info :) Mekansm is basically the item I'm replacing all my Mantle of Intelligence with around mid-late game. I've not had any issues so far getting 2 - 3 of them, I tend to farm loads early and not push a lane early game. I'm picked up a +50% Mana Regeneration mask last game, but was feeling I wasn't making much use of it early on due to auto attacking for last hits.

I have some major issues with some melee though, Bounty Hunter for instance just facerolls me and I can't seem to do anything about it (late game of course when they have loads of stuff).

Yeah, I mean I'm glad I'm able to play and test the game... but when it comes to feedback and suggestions, I can't really think of much because it's going to take ages to understand the game having never playing a MOBA before. I'd submit bugs if I see any obvious ones of course, and maybe stuff to make it user friendly for the people like me who've never played.

Bounty Hunter is a very high damage ganker/carry. Get Mek then just stack armor or get a CC item like scythe and just keep using the AoE heal/nuke.

Part of the game is learning what each hero can and cant do. Things like knowing to TP away from a Bloodseeker or Venomancer because they cant stop it, and knowing which heroes do really high magic damage and are worth getting a cloak against etc.

It comes with time, watching streams on joindota.com is normally pretty good. A lot of the time the stream casters will explain why a team should get certain items and why certain picks are good or bad.

You have to time your final attack so that it is the last hit, only the last hit rewards gold. Don't ever auto attack the creeps in the lane, it pushes the lane forwards making it easier for the other side, you always want to be as close to your tower without it attacking creeps as possible, for safety.

In terms of items I generally take regen and 3 branches on just about every hero, but then my last hitting is good enough that I am aiming for a 6 power treads most games which I guess you're not.

My best tip would be to get used to looking at the minimap a LOT, the key to being good at the game is to know what's going on elsewhere, don't get tunnel vision in lane, always be aware of what is happening in the other 2.

You don't get any invites anymore as far as I can tell, or I'd invite some people from here. Playing with other people, or playing for longer, won't make me like the game though, I just don't like the type of game, nothing to do with being bad, just the same as I don't like flght sims.

Anyway, that's my last post on this subject, I wasn't even going to post again until the quote above.

Thanks for the tips! I suck so hard at the moment at getting the last hit, probably a duo of me sucking and Necrolytes projectile speed.

Aye, I learned this recently :) I didn't even know what it did at the start, still trying to learn as I go but christ a TP scroll is utterly invaluable.

Overall, I'm still horrible, but getting better... gotta start somewhere I 'spose!. Been recently trying out some other heroes. Tried out Crystal Maiden who wasn't so bad, I managed to support quite well but I can't get a handle on keeping up money with her since I'm not on a lane and I'm bouncing around. Windrunner also I've tried, who I really like, I can last hit with her so much better than Necrolyte.

Also, this game is the most fun I've had in an online game for a very long time, definitely picking this up when it comes out of beta assuming it isn't free to play. Thanks for the tips again, if anyone has any newbie tips they are more than welcome :) trying to beef up on knowledge with some stuff on playdota.com but a lot of their guides bypass the blatantly obvious stuff.
