BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not but an allowance of 15GB a month during waking hours is pretty poor to say the least.

The knock on effect of such restrictions is all the other customers on the same CP will wait until 12.01AM to start their downloads which results in congestion and your download speeds falling off a cliff until 2/3AM when it picks up again.

No i wasn't beIng sarcastic. I honestly thought it was 15gb over the day. Over a month that is poor. In my defence it isn't clear in faq!

BT it is.

nub Q - is there a single (i.e. 1 piece of kit) replacement for the BT modem and HH (on infinity) ?

There's only a few. The DrayTek Vigor 2750, Fritzbox 7390 and Billion 8200N are the only VDSL2 routers available in this country that I can think of off the top of my head.

hmmm

Just got an letter from BT yesterday saying a company well be phoning to book a date to upgrade my modem?

We wrote to you recently about the Openreach fibre modem you use with your BT Infinity service.

We want to swap your Openreach modem for a newer version, for free. The new modem will improve your broadband connection, making your BT Infinity even better.

You'll be contacted by our partner, Kelly Communications, who are working on our behalf to set up the appointments. They’ll offer you a free appointment to fit your new Openreach fibre modem. Once you’ve agreed a time, all you have to do is be there to let in the engineer. The swap only takes about 30 minutes, and you'll soon be back online enjoying super-fast broadband speeds

How will this new leet modem make my line better ?

But why would they want to change the modem? There's nothing wrong with them. :P

I believe there's an issue with some overheating ?

Tell me about it mate. I'm with IDNet and have 30GB peak a month and have went over every month since signing up. Can't wait to March to go over to BT.

Add to that the Draytek 2850 series, has two new features, it allows simultaneous operation of a VDSL and ADSL line, & it's IPv6 ready.

Hi guys. After a bit of advice. HAd the fibre installed about 3 weeks ago. Then my phone line died and they came out to fix it. Then when they fixed that on thursday they killed the fibre.

Got them out yesterday to fix the fibre but am only getting 27-28meg now when i used to get 30-31. Speedtester.bt says my IP Profile for your line is - 28.15 Mbps.

So is this due to the down time? Will i get them to reset the system to the start and tell it to learn again over 10days to try and get the better speed back?

That speed variation is nothing.

you will get slightly different speeds depending on congestion, time of day etc.

i wouldn't worry about it.

It's not speed variation when his sync speed has dropped. If he's syncing at a lower speed it won't magically go up to what he was getting before unless the modem/router reboots and syncs higher.

This is merely a smokescreen from BT. A lie in essence.

They aren't "upgrading" the modems at all. What they are doing is replacing all the faulty modems with as little fuss as possible. If that means making up stories about "improving connections" then that's what BT will do.

Even if they are making up stories getting a new free modem is a winner. Aslong as it's better!

It's not better though. It's exactly the same modem you already have, a Huawei Echolife HG612 to be exact, just a newer revision.

Plus you'll need to take a day off work, or arrange someone to be home, as the swap over requires a home visit.

Why would a swap over require an engineer visit? Seriously is this what happens?

Yup it requires a home visit by a Kelly communications "engineer".

BT's "official" reason is to ensure the old modem is actually swapped for the replacement and people don't simply stick it in a drawer and forget about it.

I suspect the real reason is to ensure they get back as many faulty modems as possible before they fail completely and people start complaining en mass.
