Onboard sound not working

Hi, I built this new build a few days ago:

Asus P8Z68-V LX Socket 1155 Onboard graphics output 8 Channel Audio ATX
Intel Core i3 2100 3.10GHz Socket 1155 3MB L3 Cache
Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V unbuffered
Seagate 500GB 3.5" SATA-III 6Gb/s Barracuda Hard Drive 7200RPM 16MB Cache
LiteOn iHAS124-19 24x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive
Coolermaster Elite 330 Case With Coolermaster eXtreme Power 500W PSU
PowerColor HD 6670 1GB DDR3 DVI VGA HDMI PCI-E

However, the onboard sound is not working. When I plug in earphones, they produce the sound fine but the motherboard can't produce the sound on its own. I installed the sound driver that came with the motherboard CD.

The operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

look in realtek hd audio manager and tick disable front panle audio detection,if still no sound click on ac97

Hi Wazza300, sorry for my stupidity, but how did you even get the popup in the first screenshot? lol

Orcvader, how do I make sure that the onboard is the default?

Thanks for the replies guys!

Right click the speaker icon in the notification area and select playback devices. You should then get a screen like this:

bDQhY.webp

Make sure it's the Speakers that's the default device, or ATI HDMI output if you're trying to play through your monitor speakers.

The problem appears to be that you have 'digital' set to default. You want 'speakers' set to default, not the digital options.

Having said that though, you will only be able to do that once headphones or speakers, are plugged in. They should set to default automatically.

see the little yellow folder in the top right corner? click it and set it up like i posted in first screenshot, disable front panel jack detection, you should get sound then through front panel headphones,if not then set sound from hd audio to ac97 thn see if you get sound, its one of those two

you might need to unistall/reinstall realtek sound drivers a few times to get it to recognise your speakers, plug them in at the rear of your mb or else it wont detect then, thats why your speakers are greyed out

So what can I do to play the sound out loud? Are you saying that there is no speakers built in to the motherboard?

Thanks.

There are no speakers built into the motherboard. Actually, that is not technically correct. There normally is one, but it is for system bleeps, and not actual audio.

How did you come to think there were built in speakers?

I think we have misunderstood. I and probably others, assumed you could not get sound from your connected speakers. Not that you could not get sound from speakers, you thought were built in.

I thought my motherboard had built in audio? Is that not what the spec says: Realtek® ALC887 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC. Does this not mean it can play the sound out loud? Or does this just convert the binary to playable sound for external devices?

I actually feel stupid now! lol

But, I did say in the first post "When I plug in earphones, they produce the sound fine but the motherboard can't produce the sound on its own".

Okay, so, do sound cards produce sound on their own? Or are they the same deal as built in audio?

Thanks.

You can't get actual sound without plugging speakers or headphones in. Same applies to sound cards as well as motherboard onboard audio.

I think your confusing yourself, your mb has built in audio as in the onboard realtek sound chip, for your speakers they all plug in at the back of your pc case, that are marked and colour coded for example,centre/front bass and rear ports, plug speakers into those and install realtek sound drivers
