Seriously, let's have this out. (Detailing/Valeting)

wow 5 years. I remember this thread like it was yesterday. I am dissappoint. Y U NO GET OFF INTERNET AND DO SOMETHING????

and Polish carwash £4 for a wash and wax. Does the job. Deal with it.

but you can understand why a lot of us don't care about the invisible areas?

Oh definitley. It's fine that you don't care but people saying that 'detailing' doesn't exist is just wrong.

Who bumped the thread anyway?

I'm now going for a brew instead as posting in this thread is like roasting my head on a BBQ.

Because of the way light works -

a gentle t-cut could EASILY take those swirls out

1) Who the **** decided it was suddenly called detailing?

2) Why do you think it's different to valeting?

3) Why do people pay so much money for it?

4) Why do people think they can tell the difference when they've had microns shaved off the top of their paint?

5) What's wrong with saying 'I polished my car'.. isn't it good enough? Do you feel big and clever when you say detailed?

My mum doesn't detail our house, she cleans it.

I don't detail my nuts in the shower, I wash them.

I don't get up every morning and detail my teeth, even though it involves using specially formulated abrasive compounds and specialist tools.

All of you, shush! You sound stupid!

Seriously, explain yourselves.

Way to make yourself look stupid, why don't you go read what each involves and there results.

as waxing brings a shine up

Detailing removes defects in the paint work, scratches ect. that make the paint work look dull and lifeless.

Valeting and detailing are completely diffrent.

Very very OT. But why do when some people quote the above people does it come up as Mohinder/AcidHell2?

I paid a professional to detail the black XJ8 I had once, it looked fantastic afterwards and I would do it again in a heartbeat when I have another car that I love. I spent a lot of time on my 540i myself, I spent more than one weekend trying to detail it myself but at the end of the day I don't have the proper tools so I could never get the finish I wanted ...and I had a wing without lacquer on it (don't ask) ...so that was never going to be right either. Still I was happy to spend the time trying because it was a car I loved.

However the Volvo I have now, no chance, I pay some Iraqi's a fiver to clean it every so often, I have never done more than vacuum the inside and apply glass polish myself ...nor will I in all likelihood. It's not a car I really care about, certainly I was annoyed when some prat put a small dent and scratch in the door in a car park, probably with a trolley or something ...but I didn't howl in anguish and swear to avenge my car like I might have done with my black Jag ...again because it's a diesel Volvo estate ...I will always keep it in good shape, but I'm not going to lavish love that I do not hold for it, on it.

Point is, it really depends on how you feel about your car I suppose. I use myself as an example because I can well understand both sides of the argument, as to me, it really depends on the car. If it isn't one I care about that much, then I wouldn't bother with detailing, if it is, sure I would.

I would like to stress that I take very good care of all my belongings though, but I only really get 'obsessive' about the ones I love.

Something that probably should be considered. When this thread was first made, it was because there was a spate of threads in Motors where people were posting pics of their own cars, with a title like "Just finished detailing my motor, here's the pics!" and when looking into the thread, all they actually meant was they had just thoroughly cleaned it.

I don't think Mohinder/PardonTheWait was making a slight on paint correction, skimming, etc. techniques, he (and I remember I was at the time, too) was getting rubbed up the wrong way by anyone who thought that just giving your car a thorough clean for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon with a lambs wool mit and a chammy is equal to a "detailing".

Amazing how attitudes change over 5 years.

In 2007 I thought detailing was the preserve of pipe smoking cardigan wearers, the kind of people that know engine designations and and trim levels of various different models from the past 20 years from their favorite car maker.

Now I know without doubt that this is the case.

Amazing what time does.

Folding the edges of the cloth over indeed, what next? washing the car in deionised water.........wait what?

Ya bro, totaly feel you, who wonts to have a desent lookin car, as long as its got a fat spoiler and 6" zorst den scratches an dead paint aint no bovar!
