Here is my plan for Windows 7:

I am elligable for student discount for a vista/xp upgrade to windows 7 for £40 for Proffesional, and £48 for Ultimate, I thought, because Vista runs a trial period of 30 days, and my friend conveniently has a Windows Vista Genuine Disc, I could install this onto the PC I'm building in a couple of months, then, use the upgrade that I buy, to upgrade to Windows 7! Does this sound like a good idea or am I talking bull?

Thanks
Connor

Why don't you do a clean install using a upgrade copy of win 7.
See HERE.

The problem is to be "legal" an upgrade version has to be in addition to a "legal" previous version (in this case XP or Vista).

I may have mis-understood what you're saying, but an upgrade wouldn't work on top of an non activated copy of Vista. If you used your friends version and activated it to allow you to upgrade you'd be no more "legal" than if you downloaded a cracked copy I'm afraid.

An upgrade copy is designed to offer you a "discount" for a new OS because you had previously invested in the older version.

But surely, because the copy of Windows Vista is legit, and is only running from its trial period, (which is legal), surely, the following would be fine?

The trial period is legit, but to be "legal" you're going to need to upgrade from a paid for OS not the trial.

It might work but you won't technically be legit even though it validates.

Ok, I would buy the full Pro disc, but tbh, I don't have an extra 200 quid to spend, the PC I'm building is 350 quid only coz i shopped around, the full value is 450 but I compromised here and there and managed to cut down to 350 without OS, so anymore would burst my budget.

I don't have a school e-mail, I'm at a private school with few students, and I don't have proof of ID that I could use for it.

Also, I did think of Ubuntu but I like gaming, Linux=very little gaming...

Hmm maybe you could speak to your school's IT people and see what they say? No harm in asking.

I did, they said that this would work OK, but my school isn't very tech savvy, only my IT teacher is any good, and even sometimes I excel him at IT..

If you or your child is a student you can get software cheap. (you or your child) win7 pro 64bit for £40 ish from a website ;)
just google it, i will get into trouble by the forum people 4 mentioning the name.

Just to point out a common misconception - Windows doesn't have a "trial" period as such (in the sense of genuine trialware), and to run it legally, you *must* have a valid licence, even if you choose to defer activation.

The 30-day *grace* period (repeatable up to three times using slmgr -rearm) allowed before activation is simply to allow for shaking down, so that any troubleshooting which might require a reinstallation can be performed without having to repeatedly reactivate.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not going to go to jail, and personally, me saving 70 quid isn't going to put too much of a dent in old Mr.Gates pocket is it!?

I would buy the full shabang price but the dent in my budget, would be huuge. Comparatively the price of the OS is the same as the CPU... Which personally, is a bit ridiculous...

The first thing to remember when committing something dodgy (or fraud if you can call it that) is not to tell anybody. You've just revealed your plan on a public internet forum. No matter how insignificant it is, it's still dodgy and you should have kept it to yourself.

No it won't send you to jail. But principally, it is wrong and from what I've seen on the forums in the past, it is frowned upon.

Oh ok, but, it is still ok, I would think, because, It would be used for like 3 Hours, then shut off and moved over to Windows 7 64bit.
No, it isn't OK, because you're "upgrading" from an installation that was never licensed in the first place. The length of time is immaterial.

I'm sure you won't go to jail, but the fact remains you won't end up with a licensed Win7 installation, even if you can get it activated - I haven't tried doing what you suggest, but I rather suspect it will all go pear-shaped at some point. :)

if you are not worried about going to jail with the illegal windows vista install and then upgrading to a £40 windows 7 upgrade, why not just save the £40 and get a torrent version of windows 7 cracked. they are basically just as legal as eachother.

Because I am not immoral, I still believe in having a legitimate copy of Win7, having cracked torrents are wrong... Other wise, I would have to save up an extra 2 months, for a computer that I still can't get till August! :(
