LARP vs COSPLAY

I know loads of people who do Larp. Surprisingly there's a load of girls who do it. It isn't just a sausage fest. You do get some geeky types. But actually most are normall and you wouldn't have a clue they Larp.

I wan never surprised by the ammount of girls who larp, I mean it's all about dressing up and being creative, not just about whacking someone with a foam sword.

Edit: How old are some of the girls in this thread, some of them must be jail bait in some countries.

I assume "wizards" run around with little balls or something that they throw as spells.

Stop hitting me with your balls!

/snigger :p

This has made me want to try that LARP stuff but I would not have a clue where it is and the missus would never let me live it down, i'm already a great big geek to her as it is :p:D:p

Correct. I've done LARP in the past with plenty of attractive ladies but I'm not sure I'd say most LARPers are classed as normal. You have to be fairly geeky to do it.

All the COSPLAY pics going round are probably just the models showing off the stuff people can buy though! Doubt all them beauties are at it.

Aye, they roll them out for events. I've got a friend who does genuine cosplay and the pictures aren't what you'd call pretty.

I knew of both as I'm into RPGs and anime, but I didn't know LARP as an acronym. I see both as just being 'les pretend'. Could be a board game RPG like D&D, dress-up (live action RPG). Cosplayers normally go to anime conventions and dress up as their favourite characters. Answering the OP's question "Are these people serious?" Nah, it's purely a bit of fun as long as gaming addiction isn't involved (like Warcraft players with addictive personality). You don't have to cosplay either. It's just a way for fans to network with more fans. You get conventions for Doctor Who and Harry Potter as well.

Over-sensitive much?

Not doing the cause many favours tbh.

Actually he provided a rather informative post which has it's basis in fact. He wasn't belligerent or insulting. And he actually posted something of substance that for those who are interested in knowing, would find useful.

It's hardly being over-sensitive, and 'doing the cause many favours'? I don't see at any point was he attempting to 'defend the cause' or anything, simply to describe and educate people.

What do you do for fun, then? Would you care to add some insight into the topic rather than planting a thinly-veiled insult into the mix?

How could you be into RPGs and not know what larping stood for? xD

FWIW D&D is not a board game, that aspect of it is entierly optional.

Do you mean you enjoy computer game RPGs?

I honestly don't know how people can be so dense on matters like this. It's like people live with the blinkered vision that only drinking, falling or practical jokes are fun and the rest of life is about being weirded out or disliking anything different.

Let me explain many of the things people could get from these activities and I'll mention the odd thing they are similar / share facets of. Starting with cosplay we can compare this to fashion, it's the idea of having outlandish or unusual costumes but also the idea of enjoying a story / series / character enough to want to mess around for one day in a similar costume. Ever heard of halloween? It's not that different, people don't walk around in cosplay 24/7 so it can be seen largely as an event / holiday style thing. Now when your considering it's also a way of representing a fandom for that series / character in a fun and social environment (at conventions) then it's not so bad. if it's just personal photo's then I believe it's more about the costume creation so the creative skills involved in replicating a 2D design you believe is interesting or representative of a good character. There's many positive traits to do with fun, socialising, creativity and expressing fandom listed here so I hope you have the sense to appreciate some.

LARPING on the other hand is just a social activity, it's like sports meets acting (in a pantomime or stage show) but with a fantasy edge. It's large groups of people having fun, socialising and being creative in an environment which gives them exercise because they are constantly play fighting and or moving around. Again many positive traits to why you would do this so I can't understand how people can't understand an entirely productive hobby. Equally I could state I don't get sports and don't get why men would wear shorts and run around kicking a little ball followed by getting unchanged around eachother and sometimes showering together. You know, I think I know which one sounds a bit puffier if I had to say.

Anyway there both positive, active, social and creative activities so can't see any issue since they don't cause anyone any harm. It's just too sad modern prejudices are so quick to be made on any activity that isn't drinking or acting like an idiot (I mean vandalising / pranking people).

I presume you typed this angrily while in a full Orch costume?

Pass mine while your down there bud cheers ;)

You could forgive a guy for wanting to go to one of these Cosplay conventions just to gawk and slobber for a bit. Or don't they let your average Joe in there unless he's dressed up as a Gundam Balrog or something?

I suppose I can understand the annoyance here at the mickey taking seeing as I get playful abuse quite often for my main hobby anyway. But I don't care. :p

My missus used to do the anime/manga convention circuit over here as an artist (she would do on-the-spot caricatures) so I've been around a LOT of cosplayers. There was the occasional hotty, but I'm afraid that 99% of them are....well......hideous. Nothing can put you off your lunch like a bloated Gothopotimus in a skimpy costume :(

Bit obvious really... :p Most of my non-musical mates think it's a bit poncy but again, I don't care.

Camel toes the size of water melons don't sound appealing... Thanks for ruining the mental images I had. :(

I don't think LARP'ing or even Cosplay is really worse that what many people do at the weekend (dressing up in funny outfits, running around throwing a ball at each other in teams of 5-11 at a time to complex rules that can make little sense, some people make millions doing that others do it before a pint at the inn:p).

It's basically a fun social activity that can involve a large element of story telling and some creative work, whilst being a fairly good way to keep fit, and often enjoying being outdoors.

Certainly beats the hell out of going out getting drunk and nursing a hangover.

It just amuses me that a bunch of people on a computer forum, who are often quite into geeky games, and spend a fortune trying to get the best performance out of hardware look down on people that get out, spend a lot of time running around in a social manner maybe four or five times a year.
