Which 7970

What about MSI ? I hear good things.
Are there none with an aftermarket cooler ? Like the PCS+ or XFX ?

MSI and Gigabyte have better warranties AFAIK,and should not cost any more than £435 to £450.

I would still wait for Kepler to be released,if only to reduce the price somewhat.

XFX only has a two year on their stock 7970. They also do not give you an active DP adapter so you need to spend £30 more if you want Eyefinity. I say that as an owner of one.

Personally I wasn't too phased by either, given that two years is plenty of time and I don't want EF. However, do know that pretty much every other card released comes with the active DP adapter that you could probably sell for £20..

MSI are excellent for warranty IMO. The only caveat is they are based in The Netherlands, but they were super awesome to me when I RMA my Lightning. Infact, they even helped me comprehensively unregister the card and let the guy I sold it to register it, so for that they get an A+, go and see matron for another piece of tuck.

Gigabyte's office is in Milton Keynes, meaning that so long as they stay there RMA would be a lot cheaper to do. I paid £18 to send mine to the NL, but I have to say I rather like the Dutch. Asrock are all Dutch and they're lovely friendly people to deal with.

Asus? not sure about theirs. VTX? no idea either.

Fancy seeing you here !
Looks like the best option still. I'm just not sure how long that may be...

Blimey that sucks, you would assume that all launch models would come with the same bundles.

The active adaptors have also increased in price lately, I got my XFX one a while back for under £15, now certain places have it for £25 to £30...

Most of the HD7950's are the same, they don't do eyefinity out of the box due to a lack of adaptors. This makes the most expensive custom cooled models even worse value compared to the HD7970.

The BF3 patch sounds interesting. I will have to load that up tonight and run it through my Eyefinity benchmark before switching back to PLP for a bit (suffering from motion sickness at the moment when playing Eyefnity which is damn annoying).

I know they dealt with yours but MSI don't usually deal directly with RMA's from end users.

From the MSI Rep:

in an attempt to clarify.

the ticket system is for tech support, reporting issues, trying to find answers. This is operated by our HQ engineers. it's kinda like a IT issue reporting system in a major company.

It gives our engineers direct access to issues and hopefully gives end users direct access to answers. I personally have no experience of how well this works but as they do not handle RMA's themselves this would be the wrong place to simply request an RMA.

We also have a support section on our official forums btw, this is manned by many of the same people.

our direct RMA service is operated by a team in the Netherlands, they do not offer tech support, they only provide and handle RMA's and typically only RMA's from resellers direct or customers whose reseller has refused to help them out. I have visited this RMA centre and to give you some idea, when I was there last December they were operating a 48 turnaround from receipt to dispatch

We offer a three year warranty, the terms provided to our major resellers provide special terms in exchange for their agreement to handle the full three years of that warranty. This is a new arrangement made at the time that we extended our warranty from two to three years. The terms of our RMA provide a maximum 14 day turnaround for resellers (typically half that) from the day they ship the fault card out to the day that they receive the replacement.

The simple answer why we operate the RMA system like this is that the reseller will test the board and return them in batches. We can then replace the product and get the replacement back to the end user much faster than having to receive, test and dispatch multiple RMA's from multiple different people. in general, this method provides much better serviceas it allows us to keep turnaround times to a minimum, it also allows the reseller more freedom to handle the RMA by their own methods.

I hope this helps

I'd be very interested to see your results to see what the difference is before and after.

Was "cheap" mate. When I got it I paid £439 delivered. At that time the cheapest "other" card was £459. A Gigabyte IIRC.

Given they are all exactly the same (well, blower type) I couldn't bring myself to pay £20 more. I don't need the DP adapter and at least XFX had gone to the trouble of making a rather nice sticker :D

What about best custom card for OCing?

I got a msi reference now but friend want to buy it just below what I payed (40dollars) so gonna buy a custom one instead. XFX DD black edition, asus direct cu ii top something else? what do you suggest?

Going for performance mostly, noise level is important too though.

I got mine for £416 with the active DP adaptor. Got to love online price **** ups!

Phage - I will have to take a look at it.

I got a Sapphire one due to the fact it was one of the better regarded brands. It also has a few extra included items that some other manufacturers don't provide you with, but ovbiously it depends on whether you need them or not.

The only bad thing I can say about it is that the fan is pretty loud, at 40% speed it sounds far louder than my old GTX 570, however some people have said that once the fan gets some use, it becomes a lot quieter.
