Trying to work out a deal with BMW main dealer, repair and purchase of a GT

I posted previously about my manual E61 popping out of first gear. Well long story short the transmission specialists I have approached have so far not been able to get a gear box (refurbished or salvaged) and since I wanted to change car now (why didn't I do it a few months ago ;):p) I am talking to the dealer about doing a deal on a newer used car. I am loathed to chuck 1000s at this car which will make me feel like I should keep it.

I got a retail quote from them today for repair and they are going to review what the trade cost of the fix would be so we can negotiate a part ex for the unrepaired car without chipping me for the whole retail cost of doing the work.

Anyone have any idea what the typical profit level is on BMW parts at retail through main dealer?

Any advice on how best to go about the negotiation?

I guess I will be trying to get them to only reduce the PX value by their cost Ex VAT (and then obviously trying to get the best deal I can overall).

Looking to get rid of a 55 plate 523i E61 with 56k on it for a 530d GT

I have tried a GT and F11. The F11 is certainly nicer than the e61 in terms of interior (and it goes without saying the exterior is much nicer). The ride feels pretty much the same, nothing much in it. I don't think it would feel like a big upgrade relative to the cost of change - other than engine.

The GT though felt more special. I know everybody hates the look of it but I never have. I loved the interior and the ride (although there is a massive difference in feel between the softer and harder settings). I need a touring or GT as I have 2 kids and 2 small dogs so the F10 is out. I'm not particularly asking for an opinion on why I should or shouldn't go for the GT, but feel free!

Even if I was the type to blag it, it doesn't stay in 1st and effectively needs to be driven from second, so couldn't really get away with that.

ok, the sales department will not save much on the cost of parts dont know the excat figure though

where they do make a good saving is in the labour rate but a manual gearbox on a e61 will only be in the region of 3-4 hours

As awesome as the GT is, it only beats the F11 for load space with the seats down.
I can't see it being practical for dogs IMO seeing as the boot hatch doesn't allow for a lot of height.

do they even test drive it when you part ex it?

I traded in a car to a ford main dealer and they just looked over the body work, checked the service book, didn't even turn it on.

They never drive them in my experience.

I've never had anything more than a quick glance round the car and a turn of the key for warning lights, I think once I've had the car started.

Unless this 6(ish) year old car has done a million miles, I'd be asking BMW for some kind of help paying for it, seems crazy that it'd jump out of 1st gear so quickly unless you're totally inept at changing gear!

That is on the cards with the dealer supporting that too. Going to speak to BMW tomorrow as had the diagnostic report today.

I have a question about purchasing from a BMW dealer, so thought I'd stick it in here if that's OK?

If I was to be buying two (used) cars from a dealer at the same time, would that open up better discounts than if I was just buying the one car?

I know they don't test drive. I have part exed through this dealer before with nothing more than a look around the outside of the car and not even starting the engine. However, it can't even be driven off in first and I would rather be straightforward about it. They do ask about known faults and I am not going to lie.

I agree it is not as practical for the dogs as my touring but they travel well and are small (jack Russell's) so am content they will be happy in there.

I do think the GT is a nicer spec by far comparing SE to SE (and the one I am looking at has a good number of options too). The panoramic roof is nice, the driving position I like.

Moreover, I don't want a bogo 520d and that is pretty much all you can get in F11s at the moment on the used market. Anything vaguely interesting is still about £10k more than a GT with not too many miles on and an at least as nice spec.

BMW agreed to pay half the gear box which is better than nothing. Nearing the end of the deal in terms of the part x and purchase and have hit a bit of a dead end on the price in terms of any further discount or improvement.

The dealership is saying they will look at what added value items they can throw in to make it more attractive. Talking tyre insurance, etc. What is actually worth pushing for?

For the sake of completeness, I had my E61 fixed (nice to have a first gear again). I decided to change cars probably towards the end of this year rather than doing so now.
