SOPA shutting down sites now

No loss, websites that target a certain genre or speciality are bound to be shut down. Anyway, anyone hosting a filesharing website in the UK is a right nutter.

The shut down was more about how the music tracks were obtained than the file sharing. They were fraudulently claiming to be people from the music industry and asking artists to send them tracks. Or just out and out stealing stuff from them.

O is it? diddnt know that they actually stole and tricked artists into obtaining the tracks. i thought these lot just googled the tracks and grabbed it from there lol

Well I'm happy to see that all the murders have been solved and stopped, no cable thefts are occurring any more, the corrupt politicians and Police have all been jailed and now we live in such gentle peace and tranquility that our 'Serious Crimes' agency now only has music downloaders left to chase after.

A great day for humanity. :)

While the legality of the website in question is dubious, so too is that takedown notice, and indeed most of what went on around the site.
Instead of closing them down for copyright infringement as it appears the site was doing, they instead closed it down for 'conspiracy to defraud'. Why? Because copyright cases require a court order, conspiracy to defraud doesn't.

The page of the website is covered with stupid threats.
'The above information can be used to identify you and your location'

And the big one:
If you have downloaded music using this website you may have committed a criminal offence which carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment and an unlimited fine under UK law
What criminal offence is being committed by downloading the music? As far as IANAL, but isn't it a civil offence? Also, it claims that the site had 'stolen' the files it was hosting? Copying a file is in no way theft.

Long story short, looks like they've gone about this in completely the wrong way. Lets hope this doesn't turn into a similar story as to what happened with dajaz1.com

It seemed as if they lied to get access to unreleased tracks. That's what a lot of people are saying.

If you read around then you would find out it's more complicated.
They obtained the tracks by hacking and deception. It is both organised and serious crime.

The 10years/unlimited fine. Is not for downloading copyright material that is not even a criminal offence.
By the sounds of it, it's for facilitating organised crime and/or aiding and abbeting fraud.

So you lot need to do a bit of reading and get off the your high horse.
