Right so i'm ashamed to say i've never watched the original trilogy :o. I know, I know, but I'm going to rectify this by watching them ASAP :D. So the question is are the prequel films worth watching to give an idea of the story, characters etc? I watched them when I was little but can remember literally nothing about them, all my star wars knowledge comes from family guy :o. Thanks

Yes and No.

As a pretty big Star Wars fan I adore the 'original' three. Brilliant. Despite the 'tinkering' :)

The 'new' three are pretty awful films (the third is actually pretty good) and they're very much a guilty pleasure, I enjoy seeing the story being told but meh.

Pretty much Star Wars in a nut shell.

Worst bit about the prequel bits are there are a few too many throw backs to the originals which makes it all worth watching twice... Plus the prequels are all a bit too long but ultimately worth watching in order of story line

To be honest the question is do you know anything about the plot? If no-one has told you any spoilers then I think it'd be much better to watch the original trilogy (4 to 6) first; as already said they are far superior films and the twists will be more satisfying if you watch these first.

Up to you of course and I hope you enjoy them :)

Characters? Are there any in the prequels? I thought they were all just cardboard cut outs that moved about on a blue screen, which was later filled in with CGI.

Thanks, Phantom Menace it is then :).

Yeah, i was joking about watching them 1 to 6 btw, that is an awful idea. Watch them in the order they were made in, the order they were intended to be watched.

in fact just skip 1 and 2 altogether especially 1 you'll want to hunt down george lucas and beat him to death with a jar jar binks figure if you do

In an odd way it might make sense to watch them all in order - you'll see a nice progression as the films actually get better as the series goes on. The main problem with that is you might lose interest during film 1 or 2, they're not the worst films ever but they are definitely inferior - it's a good example of why decent films should be left alone without remakes or prequels/sequels to spoil them.

4-6 and then the books by Timothy Zahn.

And then 1-3.

If you take 1-3 as just filling in the back story, they're fine - as Star Wars films, even I (possibly the biggest consumer of all things Star Wars who makes time for a job and two kids) think the first two are not great. The third is actually very good... Probably because we get to see a bit of emotional conflict...

If your going to watch these films watch 4-6 then 1-3. The twists to the stories would be totally destroyed if you watched them chronologically. That said I wouldn't pay to see any after what George Lucas did to the originals in the blu ray cut. It's quite sad to see how much star wars is being bled dry.

Take mk17's link. So much more of a entertaining watch :D

I'd say watch 1-6 as you say that you've already seen the Family Guy rips so the twists in 4-6 will be well known to you (really, is there anyone over the age of 5 who doesn't know the twists?).

Once you're done with the films, I'd suggest the Clone Wars animated series too. There are some great stories in there and some excellent little pieces progressing Anakin's character development. Regrettably, Jar Jar in present too but you can't have everything.
