The way I did it at work as far as I remember was
Control Panel > Programs > Turn windows features on or off > then untick IE9, which I think reverts back to IE8... i think

Thats what I did but it got rid of IE8 too. That link does have a download link for IE8, but when you run the setup it says its not compatible with this OS (Win7). There's isn't a version of IE8 for Windows 7. How stupid are MS to do something like this!?
Also compatibility view doesn't help either.
Ohh yes that's what I did, I tried the method I said and it just hid it.That method does not uninstall IE9 but removes IE full stop (although its more of hiding it.)
What you need to do is to undo what you did so IE is visible.
Then go Control panel - programs and features and click the link on the left view installed updates.
Search through the list for IE9 and uninstall as you would a normal program.
Reboot and IE8 should be back.
