The last time I had to have a tooth removed I was 9 years old. Can't even recall it. I'm 27 and today I had to have a wisdom tooth removed as it got infected around the gum.

Thought it was a bit odd when the dentist told me that the only solution was removal or "extraction" as she put it. I thought antibiotics would clear it up but anyway I decided that she knew best and along with it I went.

Well perhaps theres a reason why I can't recall having a tooth removed as a child and maybe it's because my brain doesn't want to remember the bloody trauma of it!

I tell you it was absolutely awful and then some. The second I sat in reception and was greeted with the awkward silence I started to feel nervous. I have a fear of the dentist anyway so this was taking me into a very uncomfortable zone knowing I'd have a tooth pulled out.

Gets in the chair and she says "A slight sting". Next second she injects me into my gum and proceeds to push the syringe all the way down. More than a sting that love. I honestly thought if that needle goes any further in it's going to exit the back of my neck.

"Pop into the waiting room and we will call you back in 5 minutes". At this point I try to crack a joke to hide my nervousness and reply "If I make it back". She just smirks.

Sat in reception and feel ok for at least a few mins. Then all of a sudden I start to see traingles inside squares (has she injected me with LSD!) and then feel really, really sick. Thought I was going to throw up right there.

Considered getting up and making my way over to service desk and ask for a glass of water. Went to stand up, legs say no. At this point I am now sweating and shaking and I can feel my heart thump against my chest. This isn't normal I think. Oh, did I mention now I can't feel the right side of my face?

Get's called back into room and sit back in chair. Another injection. This time in the side of my gum right below the culprit tooth. Don't worry about mentioning a bit of a sting just abruptly say "open wide" and stick it in (no innuendo intended). If I felt terribly sick and dizzy before what's this going to do to me?

So, all sorts of tools come into play now and I'm trying to think of anything but the fact that there is what appears to be a suction tool in my gob (that incidentally keeps catching my tounge) and what appears to be a scapel as she says to colleage "we need to splice gum to gain access".

This is not good. "Your going to feel a bit of pressure". Really? Oh yes I did. She jammed something underneath it and started to prise the tooth up and used another tool as a fulcrum. I don't know about you guys but believe me when I say the sound of hearing bone/enamel crunch against metal is very disturbing and not pleasant at all.

I think I've left an imprint of my fingers into the arms of the chair as I was squeezing it that hard. My knuckles aren't usually that shade of White I chuckle to myself. The dentist's assistant can clearly see and acknowledges I'm in a state and very nervous but she just carries on. As for the dentsist herself, ppfffttt.

"Your going to feel more pressure now and some discomfort". Again the same abrupt voice and then she proceeds to come round to the other side and used my own head as a lever and then put all her effort (I did notice her panting and puffing a bit - getting off on it lol) into pulling the bugger out. Then I hear and feel a "pop" and then it's out.

She didn't even show it me (why is it we want to see it even though it's been removed - confirmation? I know I do and it's my tooth. Erm, well was should I say).

Had to fill my mouth with a cotton swab and I looked like Marlon Brando from the Godfather. Spoke like Sly Stallone (only much worse) and if you'd seen me you would swear that I'd just had a stroke.

Mouth is still numb although my fingers aren't as I can share it with you lot :p

I'm feeling a bit better now although I can hardly speak and I'm starting to get ear ache and the blood is just, well, awful.

By the way, no the dentist wasn't fit.

I had an injection to my hand when I had mine out, don't remember any of it and felt really drunk for about an hour after! I repeated myself a lot apparently!

Sounds like it came out pretty easily tbh, have heard far worse horror stories of extraction! :p

Friend of mine had the dentist kneeling on his chest pulling away :D

But I remember that injection from childhood too....bloody awful right in the gum. I'm just glad I have never even had a filling in my adult teeth.

haha awesome. I had 4 teeth out a few years ago (over two sessions), beat that boyo

The injections were awful (i got to stay in the chair for 10mins while it took affect though) especially when the excess dribbled down my throat and I could taste it. eugh, and what a taste it was.

Then comes the pressure of the guy pulling the tooth, yea it felt like he was going to pull my head off.

For some reason I thought it would be ok to drive home afterwards, it was fine, apart from the copious amounts of blood and saliva dripping out the cotton swob stuff and down my chin.

Worth it in the end though!

In all fairness it did come out pretty easily. My mum had a tooth removed once and apparently the tooth collapsed during the process and they were unable to fully remove it.

As a result she had to go to the hospital for an op to have it specially removed (involved removing nerves and taking some part of the bone out from jaw).

Pretty seriosu like so yeah Im grateful that it wasn't that bad.

Oh do man up!

Had to be the first didn't I :)

Sounds like you're a bit of a lightweight ;)

So a tooth was extracted under local, myou only felt a bit of pressure, and then the bleeding was stopped in a usual fashion.

Sounds normal enough to me.

Dont agitate the area today, salty water from tomorrow, keep it clean.

Then again, you could be just a big girls blouse.

This. Take it like a MAN!

Those crunching and wrenching sounds you speak of? REAL MEN love 'em!

My experience a few months ago with wisdom tooth removal was procedurally very similar to yours. I walked out thinking that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Mind you, I did take the next day off work when I woke up feeling like a heavyweight boxer had just planted me one.

I had a broken molar out last year. It took 2 dentists (one was fit!) and one of them indeed had to lean on my chest to get the pliers in!

Having a wisdom tooth out is nothing......a root canal filling on the other hand

I know this feeling, and all i can say is go to a specialist! My NHS dentist started on one of mine then declared that the infection was so deep that she couldn't do it and the tooth would have to come out. I spoke to a specialist in Newbury and although I was nearly £2k lighter, 2 years on and I still have the tooth and have never once had an issue with it.

There's no need for all that stress - just get sedated. I had most of the work done in one marathon 7-hour session. 2 wisdom tooth extractions, 2 root canals, couple of fillings and a deep clean. They loaded me up on Triazolam and I was away with the fairies the whole time. I wasn't asleep - I was just about conscious, but VERY happy with life :p I also have no memory of it - one of the other reasons they use Triazolam. They also had bread baking in the waiting room (the smell is relaxing) and I had a choice of movies to watch in the chair too. Not that I remember which one I picked.

Mind you, that was here in the US..... not in the UK where dentists are PURE EVIL!!!
