I've got this vague recollection of a Voyager episode set in an alternative story.
I can't remember much but the crew went from speaking to the EMH to going into and speaking to other holograms (visually same as the doctor) that controlled, ran, monitored the EMH. Sort of like a remote operator or a puppet.

Is this a real episode or just one that I was "dreamt" of a long time ago and has just stuck in my memory?

It's real, the hologram was of the EMH repair system, which (i think) they made themselves in one of the holodecks.

I'll give the Swarm a go. I knew there was various episodes where the doctor gets transported to Lewis Zimmerman.

An other Star Trek episode, with a random small bit of memory. Various small one person space ships, 3D octogon in shape. I don't remember much but in one space shot various were flying together and joining, and other flying apart and off. Sort of like the Borg spheres and their network of stations and ships.

Sounds a bit like the Tholians or the Suliban (both Star Trek:Ent) (TOS for Tholians web as well).

Not sure if it would be, never been a fan, but it might be one of the ones I did catch.

Originial question wasn't the The Swarm, guessing my memory just peiced things together and made one up. As what I had in mind was sort of a small room (cuboard) next to the medical sweet with say three EMH's running at once to operate the Doctor.

Final, what episode is it! I thought the episode was False Profits, but it's not. Think again it's voyager but I'm sure Tom is incognito on a world where is translator fails. But googling this happens a few times, I think.
