I'm a fan of strategy games like Civ V but also games like Battlefield 3.

Which GPU would be the best choice?
I know people are suggesting the 560Ti is a good deal at the moment but will the 1GB cut it in games like Shogun?

the gtx 550Ti 2GB is cheaper and looks a good option but would I be losing anything in terms of performance with it??

the p.c I'm building would have an
Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard and i5 2500k processor to go with it...

what do you think?

mmmm Flapjack!

The 560TI 2GB is your best bet for a little future proofing. I have the 560TI 1GB and can say I am very happy with its performance in all games. I can play on ultra settings on all except for BF3 which I have to turn off AA but can leave everything else on full and play well over 40FPS.

The GTX 560 Ti has 384 stream processors, the GTX 550 Ti has 192 (half as many).

That GTX 550 Ti may have more video memory attached - but that doesn't mean it has the pixel pushing power to make use of it. This review compares the 1GB versions of the GTX 560 Ti and 550 Ti in BF3 at 1080p.

Either stick with a GTX 560 Ti 1GB or spend a bit more on a HD 6950 2GB or GTX 560 Ti 2GB.

if you game at 1080p there not much gain to be had with 2gb vram

Games are starting to get much more VRAM hungry. For example with a BF3 @ 1080p ultra settings and AA then you will certainly be going over 1GB VRAM usage. Also, PC games are increasingly being offered with enhanced resolution textures (eg. skyrim and Dragon age 2) which put even more strain VRAM resources.

You can get a 2gb 560ti Here for £200. Usually I'd suggest the 6950 over the 560ti, but the cheapest model OCuk sell at the moment is £230.

I wasn't aware that Nvidia had stuck up a licensing agreement with AMD to use stream processors. :p

Seriously though I don't why companies bother sticking 2Gb's of video ram on such a low end parts a complete waste of time and shows how little regard some partners have for their customers.

yup, 2GB is definitely needed for Shogun 2 if you want all the eye candy at 1080p. Otherwise certain graphic features are auto downgraded if you only have 1GB VRAM.
