New motherboard for SSD?

My i7 rig (socket 1366) is running off a Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5 motherboard.

I'm considering dropping a SSD in to replace my RAID 0 Raptors as an upgrade but there is no SATA 3 on this board, only SATA 2.

I was tempted by the Gigabyte Sniper advertised the other day, with SATA 3, USB 3 and a nice Creative X-Fi sound chip to boot.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade? I was thinking it would be nice for boot times and maybe power consumption?

Are there other socket 1366 chipsets on the cards or is X58 it?

I would just get the SSD and be happy with SATAII speeds until you do a decent CPU/motherboard upgrade, which will be awhile as theres not much worth upgrading to for you.

Also any X58 board you get will be using a Marvell controller to give SATAIII ports and this chip isnt great.

actually ive seen a test with a x58a ud5 with marvell sata3 ports and results are just as fast as my z68 using intel sata3 ports, just dont use the marvell drivers, use what microsoft installs

I've wondered this myself. I've got a sata-2 MB but not interested in upgrading it or changing it but do think about buying an SSD. Is it still worth it?

i think its only worth it if you really really need fast start ups ect, other than that a fast hdd and a little more patience at startup time will be enough imo

but sata2 ssd's are cheaper now so would be worth a try, would be quicker than a single or even two hdd's in raid

ohh i forgot, you can buy an add in pci or pci-e sata3 controller card,no need to upgrade the mb,will most likely have marvell controller chips on them though

Link please.

I don't recall anyone on this forum being able to achieve such results.

yeah i know they older marvell controllers are bad,i wonder if any add in pci/pci-e cards have the newer controllers? if so it would be a far cheaper route

Well ive just dropped a 256gb crucial m4 in my x58 system since one of my raid 0 drives failed and i must say its a great if expensive improvement i toyed with idea of getting newer x58 board but decided id wait till i get a new cpu as i think there still plenty of grunt in my i7 cpu for what i use it for.
But when/if i get a newer cpu mobo combo i`ll proberbly just add another m4 in raid

There's very little real world difference between SATA2/3. Not worth the upgrade just for SATA3, unless benchmarking is your thing. Just get an SSD on SATA2, it'll be plenty fast enough.

Don't bother. You're not using the SSD to transfer loads of files, you're using it for the super fast access times. Even on SATA 2, everything still feels like it's loading instantly. So save the money for a future upgrade such as a new CPU/MB/RAM combo, or even GPU.
