Ok so I woke up today to read an email from an online shop that I have used a number of times, regarding one of their online competitions that I randomly entered. You know the type, answer an easy question , add email address etc..

Part of a 10k prize winner GET IN!!!!...

Email reads..

"Dear Customer,

Thank you for entering our 10k giveaway competition recently, we are pleased to let you know you are one of our winners!

Congratulations you have won £L to spend on site. All you need to do to claim your prize is enter your code at the basket. Happy spending!"

Now the £L is exactly how presented in email, I have no idea what Ive won...

beneath that quoted mail there is a code to redeem on the site.

So I go onto the Site to see what I won, I add a PSP Vita to basket, add my promotion code, click apply and excitedly wait... 2 seconds later discount applied!....

FIFTY PENCE!. FIFTY ******* PENCE!

They have got to be kidding me. Ive had emails from them in the past offering better discount codes than that.

Kinda funny... but not :(

A discount is a discount. I bet you would pick up a fifty pence piece if you saw it lying in the street.

Its not free money when its a discount applied to something I would have to pay for lol.

What the hell kinda competition pays out 50p prizes. Rage inducing!

That is stingy really.

Can you buy something worth less than 50p from them with free shipping and make a profit, just to spite them? :p

Ill add that Ive entered these a bunch of times on ***hut dot com and the last one I remember was a RIO one.. infact I just found it in my emails...

"Thanks for entering our competition for a trip to Rio De Janiero. Unfortunately you didnt win this time, However to thank you for entering we would like to offer you 10% off the site"

SO I GAIN MORE IF I LOSE?!

It's free money in a way, you are saving money which has otherwise been earmarked for a purchase. That results in you having a surplus of money to do as you please with. Ergo, it is free money.
Plus I think a trip to Rio is worth more than 10% off an item.

And so is 10k unless Im buying a Ferrari from them. Come on man, you have to appreciate the whole pointlessness of such a tiny prize. All its done is made me angry with them. lol

They almost sarcastically sign off the email with

"Well done and thank you,
The***.com Team"

I am, admittedly, being a bit antagonistic. Yeah, it is a bit rubbish. It's like when you get the lottery emails telling you of a win and they use all sorts of exciting language and then you've won £2. Gr!

:D

I couldnt resist actually messaging them about this.

I sent them a rather sarcastic message asking if the £L stood for Less than a Pound or for Lol.

If I approached a tramp in the street and said "Congratulations you have just Won 50p, Now have fun spending it!" He would probably punch me in the face for taking the ****

I used to spend a lot every month there on Blurays, I now stop as I find their delivery terribly slow.

I would buy 10 Blurays in one go and they would drip feed into my mailbox over the course of a week or so.

So I emailed them...

*Winning a competition*

Today I excitedly open an Email Congratulating me on being a prize winner. The prize in the email comes up as £L.

So I dont know what Ive won, So with anticipation I add a product to my basket and add the code I have won...

50p...

Maybe this explains the use of an L after a Pound sign, it either denotes "LESS THAN" the Pound, or "Pound? Laughter"

I understand that 50 pence is 50 pence... but when I requires me to spend money in order to gain, its not like Ive actually "Won" anything? Surely with such a dramatically presented email 50p is going to disappoint.

Slightly Disappointed "Prize Winner"

The Reply...

Hi,

Thank you for getting in touch.

I am really sorry for the confusion caused, but our winners and prizes are submitted and automatically picked so unfortunately there would be nothing we can do to change this.

If you wish you can call us on 0844 243 9090 and we will be happy to help.

Thanks again for getting in touch.

If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know.

Kind regards,
Andrew.

Would be interesting to know how the prize was broken down. Losing a competition gets me 10% anything on the whole site. Being congratulated and winning a cut of £10,000 gets me 50p. Hahaha. I got epic trolled

What I find really annoying is 'deposit an extra £5 and we'll match it straight away!'

That seems like a good idea!

Oh you thought we meant deposit right now? Did you not look at the terms and conditions on our website? It clearly states that you will earn the £5 right away after playing another 10,000 hands trolllolllol.

I'd say this was arguably legally actionable in some circumstances.
