Second monitor VERY yellow after new graphics card.

Previous setup was an HD4890 1GB which had a DVI and a VGA output. I have a Samsung 2443BW as my primary monitor connected to DVI. The second monitor is a Samsung 2443NW which only has a VGA connection and so was connected directly to the VGA port before. This was confirmed working this morning before fitting the new graphics card.

I have now bought an HD6950 2GB which has 2 DVI outputs (and HDMI, Displayport). I have connected the 2443BW (main) to DVI again and it is working perfectly. The 2443NW is connected to the other DVI port through a DVI-VGA converter and then through the same VGA cable which was working this morning. Originally I couldn't get the correct resolution (1920x1200) but found out how to get that correct through various settings and installing drivers for the monitor. The problem is that everything is incredibly yellow! Not just a little bit, it's full on banana yellow. I've tried adjusting the settings on the colour management settings tab with no difference (set the profile etc) and when changing the settings on the front of the monitor, the BLUE has no effect. So presumably there is no blue signal (from "RGB") coming through. Is it likely to be this DVI-VGA adaptor? I've ordered a proper DVI to VGA cable instead to eliminate this from the equation but does anyone else have any ideas?

Also curiously, if I try connect this second monitor to the other DVI connector (the one my main 2443BW is connected to) it won't even detect the monitor, but the main display works perfectly on the same port... strange.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Assuming the DVI-I port on the graphics card is working OK, then I would agree with you that most likely the issue is with the DVI-I to VGA adapter. Hopefully the new cable will resolve your issue.

As for using the VGA monitor on the other DVI output of the graphics card - on the 6950 only one of the DVI ports is DVI-I (outputting both digital and analogue video signal) - the other one is just a DVI-D port - so with a DVI-I to VGA adapter you won't get any picture since there is no analogue signal.

The other option is to use an active mini-Displayport to VGA adapter - but unless you got one with your graphics card then this will cost ~£20.

That doesn't work because one of the DVI connectors is DVI-D so it provides only a digital signal. A DVI to VGA adapter won't work.

The other DVI is DVI-I so it provides a digital and analoge signal and will work with a DVI to VGA adapter.

Not relevant to your situation but just for information the DVI-D is also single link so it won't support 1440p and 1600p resolutions.

Have just checked the VGA (to VGA) cable with a new one and the issue persists so assuming the port on the graphics card isn't faulty I can only presume the adaptor is the problem. Thanks for the info on the two DVI ports, I suspected it would be something like that :) .

Edit: Also just tried the VGA into the back of the 2443BW and it was also still yellow, so definitely not a monitor problem either.

Do you have any other machines to hand which have a DVI-I port, so you can test out the same adapter on a different graphics card?

If you are willing to go to the effort - the HD 4890 should have a DVI-I port - so you could try the VGA adapter with that (instead of using the native VGA port like you usually would).

No other PC's to hand unfortunately. I wish I had a second PCI-E card which didn't need the 2 extra power connectors (i.e. <75W powered from the lane). It's quite a big hassle to change over the cards entirely just to check an adaptor!

Edit: Just found X1950pro in my box of bits... only needs a single connector and is single profile so I'll check that with a molex to PCI-E adaptor for the power and report back.
Edit2: Wouldn't fit due to the massive cooler on the Twin Frozr III, so I gave up... will just wait for the cable and use 1 monitor for now (sad :( ).

You most likely have a videocard with a DVI-I (has both an analog and digital signal) and DVI-D (digital only) signal. A DVI->VGA plug shouldn't fit in a DVI-D socket though.

VGA can make some pretty strange 'tinted' (such as yellow) results if not all the pins are connected properly. Check the pins of both the conversion plug and the VGA cable to make sure they aren't bend then make sure they're properly plugged in all the way, use the screws on the plugs if possible to make sure they stay in properly as well.

It does actually fit in, the connector is the same (i.e. it looks like a DVI-I, has all the pins, but only outputs DVI-D).

Yeah found someone with a similar problem through googling but I checked mine and no pins are bent, think it's just a cheap rubbish converter (had it lying in a box from years back, didn't come with the card). Have tried it screwed in and not, wiggled around, pins look fine etc etc.
