Vehicle Excise Duty

I see.

I might as well just stop paying for the tax disc then, what a con, charging the same tax twice

At best you could call it wealth redistribution. Anyone who doesn't buy a category A tax vehicle clearly has more blood that can be extracted from their stone.

But they could have that money extracted from them by a higher fuel duty amount instead, you say? Not really. The headline price of fuel is too politically sensitive. People are historically used to paying for a tax disk. No one has yet protested over it.

So why not by weight as suggested in the first post? Indeed when I worked for the county council on highway maintenance all calculations were based on vehicle weight, and higher weight meant more damage done [so lots of miles in low weight lorry might not exceed that of a smaller mileage of a heavier vehicle].

Don't know the answer to this. Perhaps its too much effort for them to change.

You're only just picking up on this now. It's been the biggest pain in my backside that the system is not revised.

Why should I pay (for 10k miles a year) the same as someone who does 3x as much driving in a year? Stupid really

More annoying is my GFs swift. It's an 08. If i'd bought a 58, the VED would have been different even though the cars, engine and emmissions are identical

It's amazing how many cars these days conveniently sneak literally 1g/km into a certain bracket isn't it..
Yeah, it's a bit of a coincidence, they're almost exclusively 1-2g/km under the brackets, can't think of ever seeing a car that sits smack bang in the middle. They must be tuning it to sneak in under, or push power up to maximise the bracket.

Lovely looking machine, and not as heavy as I thought (quick search says 179.2 kg dry). However, the tank seems to be just over 14 liters which would get annoying unless it's particularly good on fuel?

I think you are correct, but I very much doubt the VED bands will stay as they are. Reading the recent Automotive Engineer magazines shows that very soon there will be many hybrids out on the market for regular family cars, with most of these being under 120grams/km.

All the people buying a Diesel Eco Golf 'because the road tax is only £30' will soon (who knows how soon) find themselves paying a higher amount anyway as there is no way the government will allow half the road vehicles to be tax exempt.

Charge vehicle excise duty on physical vehicle size. This would increase the total income from vehicle excise duty as we'd stop all the superecotrollcars playing the system and getting £35 a year duty for doing 40k a year in a large saloon car.

Use the saving to reduce fuel duty.

Here ends pipe dream ;)

I completely agree.

I would say add it to the price of petrol instead but we all know the Government would screw us over and put excessive extra taxes on petrol.

The DVLA wish me to pay £260. Over an average year, my car will emit a total of 2,228,000g of CO2. I understand this and appreciate this and do not feel that the £260 is excessive.

But if I was a sales rep travelling the country in a 320d, the DVLA would require me to pay £35 a year to emit 5,540,000g of CO2.

If it makes you feel better I only pay £215 a year for 8,640,000g of CO2, so there is some justice :)
