**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Was having some good fun on this last night. I mass recalled about a dozen immortals into this guys base, damn they are strong, gg 10 seconds later YAY really enjoying random

Is the new patch live? I had osme phoenixes but coudln't find the range upgrade. Really enjoying phoenix harass too

I think the new patch is today, so there wouldn't been a range upgrade last night :).

So played my placement match for season 6 and here is exactly what happened:

Season 5 bronze 2nd in my division.
Season 6 placement match.
He instantly quit for the obvious farming reasons.
His league for Season 6, gold. His Season 5 league, diamond.

And the result:

I'm still bronze. :D

Even if he were grand master and I had an epic match and won, I'd probably still be placed in copper. :p

Don't joke about it or they really will bring back copper!

The start of a new season doesn't discard your MMR from the last. I lost my placement match (to a 6 pool - eurgh) but still saw myself promoted to the league above the one I was in last season. I think it's because my MMR back then was more than enough for the promotion anyway (I had like a 75% win ratio against people in higher leagues), but they just hadn't updated it.

You could beat EmpireHappy and probably still not be promoted if your MMR from last season thought you were settled in the correct league.

Although it's a bit odd you were put up against somebody who was in diamond last season. Perhaps they just pair you up with the first person in the queue regardless of league, and the actual "placement" aspect of it is completely irrelevant? I wouldn't really treat new season placement as the opportunity to get promoted. You're just as likely to get promoted in any other game, really.

Hence my confusion, I'm playing against silvers after a couple of wins, but then 1 loss and I'm back down to bronze players. Yet here I am playing someone who is dropping to silver and gives me the win, yet the matchmaking keeps me at bronze anyway.

Phoenix change is a bit odd. It essentially means if I get Phoenixes I should pretty much be preventing zerg from going Mutalisk, but teching all the way towards Fleet Beacon just to upgrade a fairly early game unit is such a heavy investment that I doubt too many people will be doing it. And by late game I will usually have enough storms / blink stalkers to not worry about mutalisks anyway, as well as the fact late game zerg will probably be headed for Broodlords rather than any kind of heavy muta play.

Mass carriers! \^-^/

Just catching up on some posts in here! I'm fraGGer on bnet by the way, Gzero I assume you're glix? Some of you guys must spend longer on these forums writing posts than actually playing the game :) At least there was hardly anyone in the OCUK chan all day when I was on so get in there if you're on bnet

Yeah the link above is a good post if you want a v comprehensive guide to the ladder, but the one thing I would add is I understand it is somewhat easier to move up or down division on your placement match, as all the divisions are being created in real time as people play their matches. Whereas for a normal game you've got to move right into the average MMR for the division above to get promoted - to prevent you bouncing up and down leagues every few games. That said glix, if you can just manage to go roughly 50:50 vs more silver players than bronze you will get promoted - I worked my way up from bronze that way!

For what it's worth I got placed back into diamond losing my placement match and then promptly lost 5 games in a row (4 vs protoss so they don't count :D )

Played some team games for the first time.. well in about 7months. Was quite funny, owning up 2v2 just doing stupid 1base dual all-ins over skype. haha.

Yup tis me Glix. :D

My problem I find is that the matchmaking system keeps sticking me against bronzies that I win (until one uses something that I don't know the timings of or something cheeky like getting spined to death, never again though :p). It's hard to find time to play the up to 30 minute games with out getting interrupted, even though I am at my pc a lot (need job give give). I'll just keep watching streams and playing the odd game here and there.

Looking forward to being promoted... definitely feel the game is finally beginning to swing my way now that ive started playing more aggressively.. i am basically of the opinion that the longer the game lasts the less chance terran has of winning but its taken me a few years to realise that going up against a 200 colossus/stalker blob with mmm is not the best of ideas!

i now go early medivacs, get some good harrassing drops in, build a lot less marines than i used to (unless they spam immortals or voidrays) and things go much better... think my problem was i used to go 3 rax and then up that to like 6 and then 9 and i would be so happy with my macro spamming bio out that i would hit a 200 army and realise i had no vikings and only 3 medivacs :D

I also lurk in the ocuk chat room, although i dont think i have ever actually chat in it.. nice to see some familiar names though

The biggest leap I've made forward recently is simply learning what my opponent can and can't have at certain stages of the game. I used to turtle so much against everybody because I was scared of an early banshee, 4-gate or roach timing, but when you know that the opponent can't have zergling speed until X, you don't need your observer out until Y, or their warp-gate research simply can't finish until Z, you feel a lot safer going out on the map and being aggressive yourself.

It really is amazing how much more confident you feel in doing things your own way back at home when you have some sort of map control - I think a lot of newer players have the problem I had in feeling you need to be ultra-defensive while you're expanding or tech-ing, and can only really be aggressive if you are constantly spending all your money on units. You just need to remember that your opponent is probably on the same skill level as you and there's really no reason to be scared of going toe-to-toe with them.

I especially like to put early pressure on Zerg now as letting them do their thing on their side of the map is suicide. Forcing them to build units when they'd rather be droning is a huge victory as long as you don't get over-eager and lose everything. I used to think that FFE meant I needed to wall off, cannon up and hold my zealot there until I had 5 or 6 gateways producing, a robo or a twilight council working on tech and full saturation in both bases, whereas now I'm happy to move out with 2 or 3 zealots, stalkers and maybe 5 sentries as it's unlikely the opponent will have zergling speed and enough roaches to kill me. The longer you keep up your aggression, the less likely they are to be expanding or tech-ing towards something scary like Mutalisks or Infestors. I simply never knew before that I wasn't really in that much danger because I was too scared to venture out.

Aaaaand that's why 2v2 is totally pointless. Soon as you get anywhere reasonable on the ladder you just meet teams that do this :p

My PSU is still off at repair so still can't play, but I managed to get access to a PC to play my placement on though! Got a promotion to Diamond! :D

Nice one well done :). High plat myself, hoping to move up to diamond this season. I've been out of the game for months though so I'm really rusty. The metagame's changed a lot since 'back in my day'.

Recently discovered how to pwn protoss. 2 rax pressure, add medivacs and elevator your army between his main and natural, and expand behind it. Haven't lost a TvP since I started doing that.

Even if they 4 gate your first dudes hit before their 2nd-4th gateways are finished so you can almost always do some decent damage, unless you're unlucky and they happened to warp in a sentry at the perfect time but meh, no strat is perfect.

I'd quite like some peeps to 1v1 against.

Like many others I have no real desire to ladder, but I do want to improve and get a feel for how good I am.

You peeps do that sort of practice here?

Is there a chat channel?
