Contemplating an RS6

Had an RS6 avant for a few months and it was by far one of THE greatest cars i've ever owned (Coming from Porsches, Maserati's and M3's).

Got through a pair of rear tyres in 4k miles mind, and replacing the brakes will bankrupt you. NO KIDDING.

... so make sure you get one that has been checked, and checked again, and checked again.

Hassling a Ferrari 360 between Windsor and Slough that was unable to get rid of me was definitely one of my fave moments. And also seeing 6.5mpg on uphill stretches of the M1 while giving it some beans.

The C5 is a huge money pit if you look after it properly. Its a money pit even if you don't.

Major costs:

When the gearbox gives up.
When the diff gives up.
When the DRC suspension leaks.

Notice the use of 'when' and not 'if'. There is an important distinction here.

If you buy on thats had all the fixes/new parts, you should be good for 40-60k+ miles. Although people have seen issues sooner than this. Many owners are on their 2/3rd set of suspension and 2nd gearboxes/diffs.

Cambelt changes require the front end to come off and turbo replacements cannot be done in situ.

These costs kept me awake at night. I gave up and got rid.

The M5 is not as usable in rain, isn't usable in snow, but is a much better drive in the dry. I have a wee focus for bad weather.

If you have deep pockets they are great cars, but tbh I would look elsewhere.

£6.5k in 5 months? What did it need - sounds horrificly expensive to run

Replace knackered DRC with Bilstein PSS9 adjustable coilovers
Fit Milltek exhaust (ok, that was an extravagance)
Refurb intercoolers
Replace MAFs
Remap (504BHP rolling road proven)
Fix rocket cover gasket oil leaks
Remap gearbox
New front discs + pads (OEM)
Various other bits and pieces

Not to mention the £1200 I'll shortly be spending on tyres and the inevitable gearbox replacement.

Half of that isn't really running costs so much as upgrades though surely?

A gearbox remap is not routine maintenance is it?

Out of curiosity, give me an example of how the running costs of an RS6 are high compared to the E55 AMG and M5.

Basically all the costs of running a 'normal' super saloon plus the upkeep of 2 turbochargers and 2 intercoolers. You can't really expect an AMG merc or an M series BMW to be cheap to run either.

If you want cheap to run, get a Mondeo.

I hear lots of folk saying "supercar performance" and "supercar running costs". And it appears that there are many parts on the RS6 that not only can break but wil break at some point.

Are they poorly screwed together by Audi?. Or is it more the case that older examples may well have seen a few owners who have no idea what they are buying into and once realisation dawns that they can't afford to run the thing they cut their losses and punt it on to pass the problem on to the next owner ( who may well rinse and repeat )?.

Forgot that you'd spent that amount Adz, but I remember the run you gave us in it last year and the performance & noise is phenomenal!
Nice looking Clio there too ;)
