In such a lala land you've presented a paradox there. How can every need be catered for if the need for basic freedom isn't even in the options list?

Just because you are under a dictatorship it does not mean you do not have freedom. You can even have more freedom under dictatorship's then democracy. Dictatorships are only bad if the person in charge is bad and as you have freedom I fail to see how it’s a paradox.

A bad government does what the people want. A great government does what the people need.
 
OP - what you refer to is the ideal version of communism which would work brilliantly; however there is one small flaw - humans - they are not perfect and will always want more (greed)

Now consider what you mean by freedom & choice.

You have a choice, you can either get a job & get with the program or live like a rat in a hole.

You have a choice, you either vote for labour who will do nothing to solve problems & feather there nests, or you could vote for the Tory's who will do nothing & feather there nests or vote the the Lib Dem's who will get in bed with the Tory's (and do nothing).

You have a choice, you can either pay tax, or go-to prison.

You have a choice, you can either obey the laws (some of which may be unjust), or go-to prison.

Our democratic system is a shambles & our choice somewhat limited - I fail to see how the situation the above proposed is any worse than what we have today? (when taking into account at least poverty/healthcare would be solved for once).
 
Technically it's impossible to provide everything you 'want'. Human nature basically dictates that you'll always want more.

Saying that, as to your basic question. Marxist theory works on paper, and makes sense. But it doesn't work in real life because Humans will be human...

What's the point in living in a democracy when the democratically elected seem just as bad as the dictators?

yes in a heart beat, that's what a utopian democratic state would achieve anyway.

What real political influence do most people have anyway, voting once every 4 years!
 
Not being able to leave the country is the clincher for me. No thanks, there are too many exciting things to see and i fail to see what I could have more of now in terms of luxuries that would make me any happier.
