Your 'Oil Light' is more than likely a warning to show 'Low Pressure' due to there being an insufficient amount in your engine.

Engines don't like having no oil, as for your car? Stick the reg into an Oil compatibility website such as Opie Oils (google it) and it will advise you on what grade to buy/use.

Failing that check the Manual that came with the car.

Guys he's just asked a question, reading the op he didn't really open himself to a raft of abuse, not everyone is a motoring expert, also for the record the oil light could be either level or pressure.

Quite honestly people should not be driving unless they understand the absolute basics of car maintenance. This is all covered in the owners manual, along with the tyre pressures which have probably never been checked.

My thoughts indeed. I had to edit my earlier post as it was a bit ranty :o

You own a 55 Chevy? What is it, a 265 V8 or the 235 V6? Or have you swapped it out for somethign bigger ;) Probably 20W50 for that old boat anchor.

Oh wait, this is OcUK motors :(

He asked a question which he could answer himself in 2 minutes by either reading the manual, or googling it.. which is exactly what anyone answering his question would have to do.

Which also covers 90% of what's posted in motors, therefore our default response in future should be?..

90% of the motoring population don't know anything about cars or engines, it was a simple question needing a simple answer.

The original answer has been edited now, tbh it wasn't bad but no need to give him attitude or look down your nose at him imho.
