Evening,

I'm thinking of getting a new car but don't have a massive budget, needs to be smooth on the motorway (my 60bhp clio sounds like it is dying at 90mph).
i've come across :
2004 JAGUAR X-TYPE 2.0D CLASSIC 4DR with 88k miles on it for less than 3k

Are they really pricey on parts or ok? Anyone have one?

Any other recommendations? have a few k to play with.

All depends on what you mean by "smooth"

To some people smooth is nothing less than a S-Class with air suspension.

If I wanted something 'smooth' it would have to be a minimum of:

- 6 cyl
- good ride quality
- good sound insulation
- solid construction

For 'smooth' on a budget, you could do a lot worse than this:

V6, comfy seats, decent ride quality and for the £500, you could throw it away if you get bored of it.

Well i used to have an Alfa 156 TS with all the upgrades which was very comfy, i pretty much gave it away when it came to cambelt changing time due to the insane cost.

I've never heard of that type of Mazda before, will read up on it further, insurance might be a little high though

*edit* just checked insurance, cheapest is £1140 for the year which is really good

My theory is that if you want economical motoring, stick to cars that sell in high volume. I haven't looked at spare part costs for Jaguar X-Types, but as it's a luxury car brand, I expect the potential for large bills is there.

I would stick to brands like Ford, Honda, VW, Toyota, Mazda.

Rgds
