Not posted in here before, but seeing as I now own a car ( :D ) I feel that I am able :p

Basically I have a renault clio from 2005 and it doesn't have an aux plug for my phone, so I was wondering if it is possible to install an aftermarket cd player/headunit to enable this + get a better sound.

This is a picture of the current Radio/CD

To me it looks non standard and not one of the ones where you can just slot in a new headunit...?

so what can I do?

cheers :)

It looks like the original HU has the fairly standard 4 holes. You can buy a pair of removal tools, one slots in at each end, push away from each other (or towards each other, i forget) and the unit slips out.

Regarding connectors, some cars have a standard ISO connector, others you will either need to buy a simple plug in car-specific adaptor or join bare wires yourself.

If you have steering wheel controls that you want to maintain that's usually another (car and head unit specific) adaptor.

I've just installed an aftermarket HU in my sister's 2005 clio.

You don't need a fascia adapter and the connectors are standard ISO behind, so you can just buy a headunit and fit it. I didn't bother with removal tools as I got 4 nails and managed to get the standard HU out with that!

This is wrong.

Yep, many moons ago now but mine went in with 0 issues, you can even buy an adapter which means you keep the wheel controls + the cars screen still works, however i found space behind the radio was a serious issue.

How is it wrong? Some more info is always helpful you know. His pic shows the stock unit as being a slightly more curvy shape so while an aftermarket HU would fit, the front wouldn't be fitting to the edges of the console, no?

An aftermarket HU fits into the clio without any additional trim bits, simply using the radios included cage trim will mean the HU fits to the edge of the dash.

In addition he has a Mk3 clio, that trim item is for the 'current shape' mk4.

The picture posted by the Op shows no such trim and I imagine this is why fascia trims exist in the first place.

The trim you linked to exists because the Mk4 clio doesn't have a normal sized din opening, however the Mk3 clio does.

I've fitted several units to a MK3 clio WHICH I OWNED, the units fit flush to the top, bottom and sides of the dash.

Edit, just to add the MK4 clio doesn't really exist, the car the ops got is actually a MK2 facelift, however since your link posted mentioned a MK4 it was easier to assume the ops facelift was a mk3.

Bit OT, but I've recently installed by first head-unit in my Astra and I went for the JVC KD-R821BT which is a Bluetooth head unit, and I have to say, it's bloody brilliant.

All I have to do when I get in my car is stick the head unit in and turn on Bluetooth on on my phone (GS2). Then, it automatically syncs up so that phonecalls use the car speakers and the little microphone that comes with the head unit. It also goes into "Safereader" mode so it reads out all my texts, and it also starts up Poweramp and starts playing the music automatically, all over bluetooth. (The music pauses when it needs to.) I can control Poweramp using the steering wheel controls and everything, double press to skip to next album etc... AND, if I hold down the 'Call' button on the head unit for a couple of seconds, it launches Vlingo on the phone and starts listening so I can use voice commands.

It's awesome

Thanks for the replies :) however...I'm lost... :p do I need the fascia or not?

And do you know where I could get the adaptors that would enable the screen and steering wheel controls to still work?

and one last thing, can someone recommend me a good handsfree HU with ipod playback etc? :)

cheers :)

EDIT: Actually that JVC does look good, but are there better ones for that sort of price or is that the best?

I had a Mk2 Facelift clio like yours, i fitted a Kenwood HU (when they produced good stuff) and used an Audioleads adapter for the screen .

You don't need any adapters to make a new HU work, nor do you need a facia adapter, you could go out and buy a HU take yours out, slide the new one in and it would work and fit like the oem one does.

Which screen adapter you need depends on the make and model of HU your pick, i'd go for something from Alpine or Pioneer, have a look on:

And pick a HU you fancy in your pricerange, then goto the fitting adapters and see which stalk / screen convertor you need.
