Insurance is a joke!

Huh so some of you give the value of your car closer to what you paid for it instead of current value?

Might have to try then this year!

Also try modding your job title slightly and try parking in driveway/on road, for me these 2 combo varied the quote by as much 50 notes.

Im 21 and my partner 22 our 1.4hdi C3 is only £600! and thats in a city area, I guess where you are is higher risk? but since we have allot less driving experience (no crashes) but i do have 6 points.

Don't get me started on car insurance...!!!!

1st rule is NEVER accept the renewal quote - always get new quotes - do all the comparison sites THEN get quotes from the Company's own website. Elephant/Admiral/Bell will ALWAYS send you an inflated renewal quote and its as simple as getting a new quote on their website (mispell your name & postcode but other details same) if lower ring them up and they will match it.

2nd rule is 'tweak' your quote details but DO NOT LIE - tweak your occupation, if you have a driveway/garage use it, if you have an alarm/immobiliser fitted check if its thatcham 1/2 approved and enter it, under estimate your cars value, try a TPFT policy, work out your annual mileage and enter it spot on - another thing which saved me £150-200 in years gone by is adding older/female additional drivers - sounds crazy to add 2 additional drivers to your insurance but with companies which use 'set formulas' it resulted in a healthy discount - don't add anyone who has had acciddents/claims/convictions in last 5 years.

3rd rule is cashback sites - check quidco & topcashback for insurers offering large cashback and check their quotes. Chances are they are overpriced to start with but you might just get lucky.

Last thing to try is insuring the car with the wife or other relative and adding yourself as an additional driver. You won't get NCD but if it brings down your premium it might be worth it.

Good Luck.

mispelling the name is fine, postcode however not so much as it is something they rate upon

# additional drivers is an easy one to work out why its cheaper, if your a 17 year old, sole user of the car their system works out that 100% of the time the 17 year old is driving it, add on mum or dad and their system will take in to consideration that they MIGHT not be the only one using the car, hence the lower risk. the mileage one is a given as less mileage your doing , the less your on the road, less the risk of claiming.

3rd rule is cashback sites - check quidco & topcashback for insurers offering large cashback and check their quotes. Chances are they are overpriced to start with but you might just get lucky.

this one is true

similar to point two, if you got access to other cars more chance that you will be using other cars not just the one your a policy holder of

Good Luck.

i think insurance companies would like it if they could just make the number up, would mean less overheads, quick responce to queries, less time to send out a renewal figure.

not the case though, one problem your always going to see is that, when yoou get your price you look at your details and you think that you have not claimed......... this is great however insurance companies dont look at policies on a one to one measure, hence why they work off an average. so insurance companies and consumer will never see eye to eye. oh well, shall wait for the replies of "they need to change how its worked out" etc etc  :D

This isn't my renewal, this was a pre-emptive quote I got, knowing that my renewal should be coming through in a week or so (My policy is still in place till end of March). I dread to think what they're going to offer me as my actual renewal!

I've tweaked my occupation, and currently have it as the lowest quoting relevant job title.
Driveway/Garage adds to the policy, cheapest is if I leave it out on the street.
Alarm is Thatcham 1. Doesn't make a difference.
Underestimating makes it higher, I've found the sweet-spot is £10k-£14k.
TPFT makes it higher.
I've put my mileage down at the lowest I reckon it will be (6k)
Got my mum on there, she lowers it by a few hundred, but I might try adding a few others!

3rd rule is cashback sites - check quidco & topcashback for insurers offering large cashback and check their quotes. Chances are they are overpriced to start with but you might just get lucky.

Cheers, didn't think of that, will give it a go :)

Can't really do this, as my partner doesn't drive, and I don't live near any other relatives, so don't have a legit reason to do so and it would be classed as fronting!

Fronting is when you get someone else who is lower risk to "front" your policy and pretend like its for them by making them the main driver; that has nothing to do with preparing for every eventuality by adding potential drivers.

Which is exactly what was suggested. It's going to look pretty suspicious if I'm in a crash driving "my mum's" car to work when she lives 200 miles away!

no, what he is suggestion is that your added to your mums insurance as a named driver, a named driver doesnt have to have use of the car all the time, for example, if you have family that live abroad, they can be added on the policy as named driver so IF they come over and IF they need use of a car, they can use the car they are named on, but obviously they wouldnt have full use of the car when they are abroad.

You're describing two different things and confusing it all...

Adding additional drivers to YOUR policy = Fine.
Being added as a named driver on SOMEONE ELSES policy for your car (ie Not main driver) = Bad.

On the matter of named drivers, I got a few hundred off for adding my 50+ mum, then ANOTHER few hundred off for adding my 50+ dad, bonkers.

Same age as you Haggisman, mine went up £72 this year pay £500 on a yaris SR, joke really, 6 years NCB never crashed or claimed in 10 years of driving. Close to giving up my car and just using my push bike. Hardly drive anymore.

On the matter of named drivers, I got a few hundred off for adding my 50+ mum, then ANOTHER few hundred off for adding my 50+ dad, bonkers.

Strange because when I do it, mine goes UP

thats because it goes by the rest of the policy information, insurance is not that difficult to understand, if you think more than just your policy. insurance companies dont work on a one to one level, so you details as an individual might improve, however insurance companies are looking at an average
