So my turbo blew on my 'run around' which ive not really used as a run around but a full blown commuter. Only just started a new job so need me something cheap and chearful to buy, luckily a friends got a 4mo for sale..

Any of you lot own a 4mo, experiences? Tales of woe/ Joy?

are we talking a mk4 2.8 6 pot(dont call it a v6 or i'll hunt you down and slap you ) or a mk5 oil burner?

my old one :)

cracking cars and as long as you maintain them "properly" - ie dont forget to service the haldex they are pretty much bomb proof bar a few niggly issues, rad fans are a known issue but 99% will have been changed already, they also like to eat cam sensors but its a single bolt to remove and not too dear to buy part. 5 min job to change.

anything in particular you want to know?

they do get a bit thirsty if you horse it but the noise makes it all worthwhile :)

Thats rather nice.. Thats reassuring, thanks for the info :).
Oh yeah, i only do 50 miles a day so it wont cost the earth.. the one im after is a silver 3 door with r32 wheels. looks ok.

What about decat and filter / remap - make much of a hike? 230 ish perhaps?!

Mate had one for a few years, traded it in for an R32 a few weeks ago. His 4 Motion was immaculate when he bought it and he is a picky git who borders on OCD when it comes to caring for his cars but the 4Mo was an absolute money pit for him, spending thousands on it. He loved the thing but was glad to see it go.

now if you nanny it about and play nice they will do this

Yeah, ive had a modded evo before and know all about obscene fuel bills, this will be somewhat down on the 55 mpg im used to but a darn sight better than 18 on a run..

you wont see any massive gains tbh- best just enjoy it for what it is, you'd be lucky to see an extra 15 bhp with teh above. save the cash. the only reason to fit an induction kit and exhaust is for some lovely sounds

or you can go down the route i did spend £1500 on breathing and cams and be bitterly dissapointed when it makes 230 horse on the dyno.

best advice is buy a cheap second hand exhaust (leave the cat in place as its not a major issue and you wont gain anythign really other than a headache come MOT time) i went for a ecs induction kit but you can get cheaper ones than that.

or alternatively buy it run it for a year and chop it in for a A3 3.2 for £4500-5k with 250 horses and mk2 haldex

I had a Mk4 golf V5 many years ago (I know you asked about the V6)

It was the most pointless car in the world, I got about 15mpg day to day if that, it cost a LOT to run, the auto gear box died at one point which cost a good 3k to fix. It was not that fast. Just nothing special considering what it cost to buy and run.

I was looking at the a3 3.2's a lot of car for the money arnt they. I dont wanna spend loads as im buying another MX bike and theres another whole season of road biking to be had... Love my cars, just not a priority atm ! Thanks again for the pics / info though..

PS - haldex controllers - worth it?!

oh and if you do decide to mod and go super low invest in a factory sump guard :)

saved me so much pain over the course of ownership :)

haldex controller HELL YES. totally transforms the car, from a safe and sensible family hatch into a totally different animal. its difficult to describe unless you've actually driven a car with and without, it just feels so much more alive. theres a few different controllers out there too, everyone goes for the HPA unit which is just a more aggressive version of the original but iirc it was forge offered a controller that locked the car off with a 50/50 4wd split. and theres a guy on the vw forums that offers his own homebrew controller that offers in car adjustibility :)

I nanny by 1.8T about an only manage 25.4mpg average! Been told I should expect low 30s. I know my acceleration can be hard, but if I slow down I'm holding up the traffic or falling behind.

Yeah they go for **** all these days, seen them for around the 1500 mark for the 170 brake jobbys. Interesting engine, just too thirsty for the performance..

Weird, my mate used to get 35 out of his 1.8t and he used to drive quite hard 75% of the time!

What went wrong with it?!

Haldex problem ( can't recall what exactly but it was expensive ), coil packs, suspension arms, shocks, ABS problem ( sensors and pump ). He also had an intermittent misfire even after the new coil packs were fitted, it was traded in like that. And the corrosion he had on the sills and bottom of the rear doors was crazy, needed a lot of bodywork / paint done on it. And as I said, he was pretty OCD with caring for it so quite surprising really.

That said, I believe his "Friday car" was / is the exception to the rule. Pretty sure these things are generally reliable.

know the feeling, our LCR used to sit no higher than mid teens.

gi - updated post 15 with haldex controller stuff
