Hi guys, hope christmas is going well for you all,

My missus is currently on the hunt for her next car to replace the dreaded 2002 Vauxhall Astra, its still alive, but after replacing the EDU, Altenator and a load of other cosmetic things, its basically falling apart and sounds like hell when driving it. Very noisy inside, but i suppose this is understandable in an aging vauxhall.

Were going car shopping this week, and would like some recommendations from you lovely motoring heads, She's not looking for flash, or fast, but something reliable, quiet and nice to drive on B roads and the few motorways we have here.

Ive been driving an E46 320i for over a year now and its very quiet on the inside, nice to drive and not too bad on the juice. She likes this car but not keen at all on RWD.

So far she has got her heart set on a Vauxhall insignia, as her budget is around 8/9k. We have seen a lot of them around and the interior and shape is very nice.

Also might be interested in an Audi A4, they are resonably cheap now, but to be honest the miles on most of them are too high. Her Astra has 122k, for her budget im guessing she is looking for something around 50k ish.,

Been trawling used cars ni, and pistonheads for some ideas on what to look for this week, but if you guys have had any recent purchases you would like to recommend were all ears.

And just to finish, something with enough room in the back....for the baby seat lol

Thanks guys.

Ridiculous performance car suggestions in 3, 2, 1...........

Anyway, before OcUK Motors do descend in this thread with all manner of ridiculous 200bhp cars, I'd like to suggest something like a Golf or a Focus. You'll get a pretty new, decent example of either for this money.

Golf or whatever she wants, if you make her buy something she doesn't want when it breaks down it'll be your fault, when it needs maintenance it'll be your fault, if she crashes it it'll be your fault, if the buggy / shopping / mother in law / kids seats don't fit guess what it'll be your fault.

It's much more satisfying saying "told you so"

My oh rarely drives more than the 7 miles to work and a bit shopping so when we got rid of her A class I got her a Mazda 323 for £700 from someone who wanted a quick sale.

No bells, no whistles but very reliable although I doubt it would interest you with the budget you mention.

Hahahaha, do you know her? you got it spot on already with her current car.

In all honesty, im not here to force a certain car on her, only give her suggestions as the astra she bought came with all the added chav extras, and to me i would have ran a mile, but to her it was perfect. Something standard, well looked after and if its too plain she can add alloys etc on her own.

just refreshed this and was already looking at something like this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3512753.htm

Whilst I have no doubt the car is good and it certainly has very low miles, no way would I spend £7000 on a 2006 Golf 1.6 litre.

Equally as good as the Golf.
Less than half the age of the Golf (3 years newer), has the bigger bumpers and side skirts as a Zetec S and has sat nav.

EDIT: The mother bought a 1.25 Fiesta (higher powered 82PS version) Zetec that was 7 months old from Motorpoint - May be have a look there? They do some pretty decent prices on nearly new cars.

We went and did some looking today, was close to a vauxhall dealership. Seen the new astra sport, that car has come on leaps and bounds and looks very nice.

She has her heart set on vauxhall insignia in white, so we looked at a few, the Sri version, the 2.0lt diesel and she definitely wants one. They are looking between 10.5k for an 09 with 30k miles or a marked down 2011 with 2000miles for 16k but the dealer said this might be negotiable with a trade in on her astra.

So since she will be deciding over the next few weeks I'm not suggesting anything else, and the dealer is due to call us back after he has phoned around the car lots to check what else is available.

Little update,

She got the car she was looking for,
late 2009 Insignia, 30k miles, 5 year warranty, £7.4.

Just curious, why would she not be keen on RWD. Bar Vikki Butler Henderson, she probably wouldn't even have a clue what wheels were driving the car in 99.9% of driving scenarios

Because we live in England where it always snows constantly so she would be stranded for ever.

There was no explanation above for why she preferred front wheel drive, but sure if that's your conclusion go with it.

@Windle
Lol its a 3 car parking space, lines were done wrong cause you can only get 2 cars in there. ;-)
