23% rise on rough sleepers

When I was in school they made us (under supervision) question some homless people in central London. It was suprising how many people CHOSE to live homeless and not recieve any state benefit.

If they paid attention at school and developed a brain they could easily be squatting in an unused house right now, with lots of legal rights, instead of being on the streets. What idiots.

There are actually signs in windows of local stores and areas where homeless people hang about where I live. They read, do not give the homeless change. There are 11 societies in Southampton alone set up to feed and shelter homeless people, you are only contributing to their drink and drug habits.

Life's not as simple as that for many people less fortunate then us, a large number of rough sleepers are on the streets because they have drug or drink dependencies or more tragically their parents do!

I imagine it's pretty hard to get on the housing list if you cannot even stay sober long enough to not get kicked out of Hostels/Homeless shelters ..etc

Address the reason why they are drinking or drugging themselves to death and perhaps then we can start to help them.

I used to have little sympathy for homless people. Like many people on here I used to think that if they wanted to get off the street then there were plenty of hostels and help etc to get off.

My wife works as a manager for a young persons charity which often deals with homeless people. It has really opened my eyes. There really is hardly any help out there, and the majority of homeless people are far from being scum, they are simply people who have had a run of bad luck or made some poor decisions. You might think they can just stay in hostels, but a lot of people deliberately stay away from hostels as they are rife with hard drugs and violence. There is a huge lack of suitable accommodation out there for homeless people, and unless they are under 18 or considered very vulnerable (and I mean very) they are likely to be turned away as there is nowhere for them to stay.

Getting a job is hard at the best of times, especially at the moment. But try doing it when you have no permanent address, clean clothes or education. Then most benefits are also hard to get if you have no address.

There simply is nowhere near enough support out there to get people off the street. I think its shameful that in a rich western county we can let this many people live on the street. Ok, there are a few people who choose to live on the streets, and some that may deserve it, but the majority have the right to basic shelter and food.

some **** has been kipping in a dodgy tent on the grass on the entrance to our estate last few nights, God help him if he's there when I come home ****ed tomorrow night :p

I often want to help people sleeping rough but there's no way to tell who is genuine and who is not. Beggars in London are a nightmare, I've seen some "homeless" people changing "shifts" and getting into a Merc. :(

It was easier in Aus... gave a wedge to some woman who was asleep in a side street with cockroaches crawling over her. Made me retch and couldn't bear to see it. :(

Just think how easy it is to become homeless, then you understand why you should have sympathy for them. Hostels are quite unforgiving and get a job to pay that pays enough is hard. I don't think many people can live off min wage these days now.Even if they get a job paying the rent is going to be a massive struggle. Might even be better off homeless.

offer to buy them a sandwich or coffee instead of giving money and then see how desperate they really are

Life is tough:( I remember from some TV program, that in Russian city of StPetersburg alone there are 20.000 homeless children. Incredible:(

What makes him a '****', have you sought out to why he's there? Might be a reason.

Phone your local police station and see if they can do anything?
