Hi guys,

I had a call from my credit card company last night, number looked strange and didn't trust it, so I rang their official number and it turned out legitimate. Basically some cheeky so and so has bought a few things online with my card, but they caught it after they got greedy on their second attempt.

What I don't fully understand is how they've got away with it without knowing the CV2/CVV number on the card? I've gone on to the websites that things were purchased on and both of them require the security number.

I've gone through my recent purchase list and didn't see anything that would make me think it was a dodgy retailer.

I've scanned the laptop for key-loggers / dodgy spyware etc, so I can only assume somebody's used the number on a copy of a retailer receipt, but can never be too sure.

Should I just accept it and get on with my life or get to the bottom of it?

I'm very careful with my cards, so don't think it's anything I've done knowingly!

Dave

Accept it, get a new card, monies refunded and get on with your life.

Used your card in a shop/petrol station? Probably happened there.

CVV numbers are NEVER recorded anywhere, let alone a receipt.

Also Verified by Visa and Mastercard securecode can be bypassed by the system at times of peak load so no codes/security is required.

A few years ago I was alerted to unauthorised transactions on three of my credit cards, all in a fairly short space of time... one was a 'company' card, one a Gold card, and the other a 'normal' credit card.

None of the cards had ever been outside my possession, or used to purchase goods or services from the same seller.

The only common link I could think of was the issuing bank!

All disputed amounts were refunded and new cards issued, but it certainly made me think!

It happens and isn’t worth getting worrying about. You’ve done all you can with a local security scan. Get your new card, a refund and move on.

Seems like you were the common link :D.

It must have been a slight of hand when I paid on a reader and they looked at and remembered the number. Or maybe they can pay by phone? Meh, oh well. I've got other cards I can use, just a pain with timing as I wanted to get the cashback on a big purchase this weekend!

Well, obviously, as they were all my cards, but they had no 'useage' in common, and I found it rather strange that all three had been 'compromised', at around the same time.

I am obviously missing the joke here though.

Do you live with anyone else? House share etc? Leave your wallet in your works drawer? If all 3 cards are from the same bank/company then it could be possible its someone on the inside I suppose.

No, just me and my wife... wallet never left anywhere outside my possession.

That was the conclusion I came to in the end, and the bank were very helpful throughout, immediately crediting any charges (which ranged from betting, US magazine subscriptions, baby goods purchased in Germany etc.) which I said were nothing to do with me.

Not always required. :)

Happend to my wife, someone got hold of her Debit card details - the first she knew was when her account was suspened and couldnt withdraw money from the cash point. She was lucky in the sense that they only spent about £5 on a take-away, they then became greedy and tried to withdraw more than was in the account - they didnt get anything and the bank suspended the account.

For sure if they had got all her money it would have been a big pita but the biggest pita is having to cancel cards, get new ones, wait for new pin numbers etc.
