Edition 30 Golf GTi - any opinions?

Blackhawk, do you have any normal pictures that make the car look normal and let us see how good it looks in RL?

Your pics are just overprocessed with effects and imo ruin how I see the car :)

The FN2 is an uncomfortable, rattly, gutless car (I owned one between 2008 and 2010). The GTI is much better built, much more comfortable, more economical, faster and a much nicer place to be.

I agree with all of this but this just makes it the car to go for in the first place. Once you've already made the choice and gone with the FN2 it seems pretty daft to then blow £4k 'upgrading' to the class leader of the same age. Best to wait it out until you can move on a generation.

Depends how long you are willing to endure the worse car when your heart says Golf.

And they really are chalk and cheese, especially with the DSG box.

I'd wait it out until the newer model is within budget, its not like your current car is falling to bits. I get tempted to change all the time but whats the point if its a want and not a need, even mentioning the £4k suggests you realise its a waste of money

To be honest you're probably right. Might be best to wait until the mk6 at least starts to fall down into budget. With the mk7 around the corner it'll likely send prices down..

Any thoughts on 'downgrading' to a Mondeo St220?

I have an Ed30 DSG with a APR remap with something in the order of 280-300bhp, I've not dyno'd it but it's around that figure. It's a very nice car although with standard power it's not a very exciting car in all honesty but that's easily rectified.

On a car that old I'd make sure it's had it's cambelt changed and also the DSG gearbox serviced also, these should be done every 4 years/60k miles so should be done - but as some people can be tight it's good to check.

They do hold their value well (similar to Audi's do).

They do indeed hold their value which means you gotta be a vw person to buy them but as someone whos had a 25th anniversary, i get their appeal, its just a shame they dont do a diesel....

Don't get me wrong here, I would love a Golf GTI, but £12,000 for a 5 year old one? Special Edition or not it is a lot of money for it!!

This is where i'd struggle. I mean if you don't care about the refinement, and don't mind a crap badge and a plasticky interior, the Leon Cupra will tick most of the same boxes for less money.

Plus a 5 year-old Focus ST would be thousands less.

Thanks for all the input guys.

At the moment I think I'm leaning towards a 2004 ST220, Performance Blue with 65k for £3500. Half the price of what I'd get for the Type R and likely a bit more practical day to day.

Any thoughts?
