It will have a turbo though.

Looked at the 335i and 330i but unfortunately it would need to be a touring as I need to cart a dog around so the saloon/coupe is out.
Totally agree.

Ed30s have the larger turbo, they remap to silly power
An Edition 30 is much more refined and comfortable than an FN2 type R. He may want this.
I'd agree with this - its a lot more comfortable/classy than my current car with a far better interior. 5 doors is handy as well. I'd also agree that I'm in two minds on whether to spend 4k for the differences..
so something like this would do?

Different yes, butid hazard a guess that the BMW certainly won't be more boring...

That looks fantastic, must see if they can provide more photos. Only thing I'd be worried about with that is the reliability + costs if things went wrong. Need to look into the BMW warranty for that sort of mileage...
The BMW and Golf are two totally different cars though?
The golf will be much more of a pleasure to drive quickly. The BMW will be a great mileage cruncher although quicker yes but much more boring.
The FN2 is an uncomfortable, rattly, gutless car (I owned one between 2008 and 2010). The GTI is much better built, much more comfortable, more economical, faster and a much nicer place to be.
Why have I never heard of a Golf GTi Pirelli edition? They look amazing!!!!
The ED30 is a lovely car too, and can see why you are wanting one over the FN2. Much better car IMHO. Although try and get the ED30 with leather seats as those Burberry style ones are horrific.
That's fair enough if you want a hot hatch, but to call the 335i "boring" is just plain wide of the mark.
I've not driven one but I don't need to - it's universally accepted as being one of the best cars in it's class for driver enjoyment and all-round ability.
