I already have the case, hard drives and PSU (CoolerMaster RealPower 520w) so I'm only after the CPU, motherboard, RAM and GPU.

It must have HDMI and be able to play games at 1080p, so how does this look?

Would I be correct in saying that the G840 cannot be overclocked at all?

A 6850 is a faster card - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=gx-269-as&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1866

I would go for a low-profile RAM kit if you ever wanted to add a aftermarket heatsink with a future overclockable CPU.

How about a splash of colour? - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-114-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

Then anything more is a waste of money because as you confirmed, I can't overclock?

The Pentium uses very little power and creates very little heat.

It has a locked multiplier and no turbo boost, so can't be overclocked by either method.

The Z68 will accept a "k" chip in the future or an equivalent ivybridge chip that can be overclocked.

You could buy a aftermarket cooler then.

stupid big ram is stupid

I'm running 1866mhz normal profile ram with normal flat heatspreaders and it gives me no issues

these ripjawz/vengenace etc. may look "cool", but they are entirely pointless and will only cause you compatibility problems if you plan on upgrading CPU later

just my 2c

Not sure how bus speeds affects RAM these days? I'm still used to buying RAM based on CPU bus.

And would you say this spec (one you recommended stu) would run recent-ish games at 1920x1080 without issue?

Don't have a window case so not really fussed what it looks like inside.

There's a 5850 on the MM, could save a few quid by getting that over the 6870 as performance is very close?

Easy decision then.

Fairly close but the HD 6870 has the upper hand:

HD 5850 v HD 6870

HD 6850 & HD 6870 review

The HD 5850 sits between the HD 6850 and HD 6870 for performance.

But then a second hand HD 5850 saves you a fair chunk of cash.

Ordered CPU, Crucial Memory and Motherboard as suggested and bagged a 5850 from the MM, total cost, ~£250 :o
