Hi, first post on the forums but been lurking a while.
There's a few things you can do, unlock it, root it, overclock it, upgrade the ROM to a custom one running Gingerbread 2.3 (4.0 Icecream in development), Get flash working (iplayer etc).
I unlocked mine from 3 a couple of nights ago, then installed CyanogenMod 7 which is the unofficial way of getting Gingerbread on it. Once Cyanogen is installed you can overclock from the settings menu upto 768Mhz (600 standard).
My phone is so much more responsive now - wish i did it sooner.
My Quadrant score went from 600 to 1800 (quadrant is a benchmarking suite for android find it in the market)

Some apps you may want are:
Getjar - Its another market for apps, but you get apps for free which are paid for else where, updated daily
Unlock with wifi - Stops you phone locking when at home and connected to wifi
WiFi file explorer - connect to for phone from a browser on your PC or lappy
Tapatalk - Forum tool for mobiles
smart office - office suite compatabile with Microsoft Office
Dolphin Browser HD - good web browser
App to SD Free - makes moving apps to SD quicker and easier
App lock - lock apps with a password
Astro - File manager
All of those apps are free on getjar and a few are free from the android market.
To get Getjar just google it from your browser as i dont think you can get it from the android market.
