Just picked up a '97 306 roadster (2.0 16v) for £200...

Body work is really good condition as are wheels tyres and exhaust. The interior is a little tatty but is good enough. Under the bonnet looks very tidy and the car had a new clutch and loads of other bits in 2008.

I have just changed all the filters, oil and plugs, but the throttle response is fairly shocking and it occasional jerks between 3-4k revs. I only picked the car up last night and spent today working on it (Trying to get all the horrid electrical faults fixed). Its only on 47,000 miles but its all slow island driving no motorway miles.

Any ideas on what it could be? I am going to clean up the throttle body tomorow, but am unsure where to go if that doesn't help.

Thanks in advance for any advice :D

Doesn't that engine have a distributor? (Could be wrong) so first thing I would check is leads then dizzy cap or coilpacks if that's what its got. Start by switching them round and seeing if the jump changes.

Its one of the following in order of likely hood.
Throttle position sensor (So sure its this)
Coil packs
Green coolant sensor
Block in air intake
MAP sensor
Dodgy throttle cable (too much slack)

I own a 306 gti6 so im fairly clued up on what goes on them
(the sensors are pretty much shared throughout the range.)

Thanks for the help, i'll go through that list tomorrow, I cleaned the throttle body today and took the car for a good run which seemed to help a bit, also got the electric roof working! The throttle cable hasn't got much play in it and the air intake is all clear, so its probably a sensor as it seems to be getting through more juice than i'd expect.

The 2.0 306's all give about the same fuel ecconomy whether you get the gti6 or the awful 2l 8v.

Ok I managed to remove the throttle position sensor, nearly taking all the skin off my knuckles in the process :( and have ordered a replacement. If this doesn't cure it (I think it should reading about the issues it causes online) what would be the next item you would replace?

The other issues I am having are the speedo and odometer don't work (I checked behind the instrument cluster but its just 2 plugs.) One of the receipts I have for the car is for a speedo cable in 2005 but have no idea where its located.

Also the only window I can't seem to get working is on the drivers side. So I took the door card off and had a look and I think it could be the switch as the contact point on the switch for the drivers window looks like its worn off the PCB (is this common) and I cant hear any clicks from the motor atall. whereas the passenger window isn't automatic and it works fine. I can take a pic if it will help.

Thanks again.

Just to say the Throttle Position Sensor cured my problem the throttle response is so much smoother and the jerking is non existent so a massive thanks to Eliot and to everyone else for the help.

No probs :)

I had a similar issue with my window but it turned out to be the switch cable was hanging on and not actually clipped in.
The whole window reg can go on a 306 though. quite common.
If its still un economical try the lambda next or the green temperature sensor.
I'll look up the speedo thing too :)
