Hi all,

Been out of the hardware game for a while so I'm not sure about this. I bought this motherboard hoping to use a few of my older componants to keep my build costs cheaper. However I have just hit a potential snag, the PSU in the old machine was a 450W so I was hoping to use it and its a ATX v2.0 (it has the extra 4 pin motherboard connector).

The Manual did say it needs a :

"ATX 12 V Spec 2.0 or later"

so I did not bother ordering a new CPU. However now I have the motherboard it has an 8pin connector. Can I just get away with using the 4 pin? The manual also says:

"Do not to forget to connect the 8-pin EATX 12v power connector; otherwise, the system will not boot"

Do I need a new PSU? if so what revision of ATX?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

It provides power for the CPU so as long as it's a decent make of PSU and you aren't doing much overclocking it should be OK.

It won't do any harm to try it, the PC just won't boot or it'll crash if there isn't enough juice.

The 4 pins cable will fit in one specific half of the 8 pin connector on the motherboard so if it does't seem fit then try it in the other half.

You probably need to give more thought to whether or not the PSU will power your other components, such as a graphics card if you have one.

Hi again,

Well no dice either way as the 4Pin gets fowled on the gfx card and does not reach. However I found an extension so I'll have to wait for that to be delivered

Thanks!
