Hello Gentlemen,

Just wondering if any 7950 owner in this forum have encountered problems with their card?
I bought a Sapphire 7950 OC on the first days of it's coming and I'm now getting worrying stability/artifacts problems. Sometimes while playing my games crash and I get a message from Windows saying that the ATI driver had to be recovered or on other situation I get weird looking black dots or lines all over the place.

The card is running at its factory frequencies (900/1250) with the first official drivers for the 7900 series.

Any lead or ideas on what could I double check before engaging OC UK for RMA?

Thanks

Rest of spec including PSU model?

Also, run something like CPUID Hardware Monitor or Afterburner to check your temps.

The main specs of my rig are:

Antec P280
Seasonic S12 650W Energy+
Core i7 860 @ 4Ghz
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Dual Fan
Asus P7P55D EVO
G.Skill RipjawX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

As for temperatures I have GPU Observer running as a gadget on my desktop, idle is around 45°C and right after a gaming session it usually shows temperatures around 68°C.
I believe those are well within the limits of the chip/card but I do find them quite high for the Sapphire special cooler considering all the reviews I read.

I was using the first official drivers for 7900 series (file called amd_radeon_hd7900_win7_64 rc11). I'm now trying the 12.2 pre-WHQL official beta to see if it makes any difference.

I'm hesitating whether upgrading my power supply could help...I have a lot of other stuff too in my config and even though from a general voltage perspective I haven't seen anything alarming I'm wondering if it could be because the card doesn't receive enough "straight juice".

I was getting that driver crashing problem with my 6850..

It suddenly stopped two days ago though and i've had no problems since...

You're probably right...just wondering as apart from what I mentionned earlier I also have 6 HDD, 1 SSD, 2 PCI additional cards (Asus Essence ST & Wifi G), several USB devices, 6 120mm fans,... so in total could it be too much for my good old Seasonic (been using it for a few years now)?

Well I was still experiencing graphic glitches so I ordered myself a new X-760 power supply, will see once I get it. If the symptoms persist I guess I'm good for an RMA procedure.

Every time I have had the same problem as you it was either overheating or lack of power. For me every time but one fitting a proper branded psu with much more power than I thought I needed fixed the problem straight away. Just be careful to avoid cheapo psu's as they are normally not very good when pushed.

Hope you get on ok ;)

Have had some of the problems you've mentioned with my reference sapphire 7950, my temps have only peaked at 63 after 3 or 4 hours of BF3 though. Have had no issues with artifacting after getting the 12.2 drivers but there is the occasional crash in BF3 (could be the OC, running at 950/1350 iirc on stock volts, +20 in CCC)

Had considered the RMA myself too, keep us posted mate!
