As per usual I'm being incredibly indecisive and need some help with deciding where to spend some time from May-August.

I need to consider the following factors:

- I will be travelling alone, which means I will probably want to travel for a shorter period, perhaps 2 months
- I do not want to travel somewhere easy or where I could casually go on holiday to, but I don't fancy travelling somewhere very difficult either (I think this may rule out European countries and also places like India which are a big culture shock)
- I need a mixture between culture and meeting people, half and half is ideal.
- Budget is a maximum of £4000 including flights, but cheaper is much better

With this in mind South East Asia and Africa are looking promising. I have done more investigation into SEA but I'm being put off by the weather. From what I gather Vietnam and Thailand have horrific weather in the time period I want to travel and since weather can make or break a trip this is making me think twice.

Any advice, ideas, thoughts etc are most welcome.

Thanks in advance :)

Well i went Thailand i left two weeks before the floods it would not put me off going again the same time
If i saw a cheap flight i would go

I was going to say, the US isn't particularly cheap :p

As cheap as you make it to be honest, although saying that I suppose once you've got over the cost of flights, the far east may work out with more bang for your buck.

What time of year was this and when was the flooding / where?

I spent over a month in the US and in all (inc flights) it cost me less than £1k... 2 months for £4k would be easy. Depends what you want to do...:p
Did you do a west coast / east coast trip? Hostels etc?

I travelled around SEA with my wife for 2 months after we got married and love it.
Sounds good, when abouts was this and what was the weather like?

Thanks for all your responses :)

Central America. I spent four months in Costa Rica and Panama and loved it. Can be done quite cheaply (aside from flights), the people are fantastic, there are enough Americans around so you can meet people if you need to, but they aren't everywhere, and there's an awful lot to do.

Who hasn't been to SEA?!

Africa ftw - it's where I want to go, post-uni.

Why rule out Eastern Europe, though? You say ease of getting there... but meh. You could go down through the Baltic states/Berlarus/Ukriane/Black Sea/Turkey. It's ~only~ Europe, but you've still got to go to the airport and fly somewhere... so what's the difference between a flight to Eastern Europe and a flight to Northern Africa? They probably require a similar flight time.

I don't really care if SEA is obvious, it's supposed to be a very nice place to go.

Europe doesn't particularly appeal to me at this point, although I'd like to explore Greece at some point.

It was more a joke/regarding the not wanting to go somewhere ~easy~ criteria.

Why would India be more of a culture shock than SEA, btw?

Because everyone I know who has travelled in India said it was difficult and a few of them wouldn't go back. Yes, I have a shocking amount of well travelled friends to validate this statement :p

On the other hand, everyone I know who has been to SEA has said it was relatively easy *shrug*

My next longish Holliday I want to do, Chernobyl, Moscow, Siberia.

Australia is very good for this, though huge number of pack backers and a massive range of things to do. From easy to hard.

Thanks for all your responses :)

The weather was fantastic.

We got married in india, then travelled around india for a week with 14 of our friends that came out for the wedding.

Then we all went to Bangkok ---- down to Kula lumpar --- Bali (stayed in the forest for 3 days and then then by the sea for another 3) ---Singapore ---- Bangkok -- Chang Mai --- Chang Rai --- Phuket (2 weeks)--- Hong Kong --- Dubai --- back to the uk.

The total trim started on 10.12.10 and finished 14.2.11.

Overall Thailand was probably the best, Chang Mai and Rai are well worth seeing.

I found shangri la to offer the best value for money if you want to stay in luxury but not pay stupid amount. For example we stayed for 2 nights in the mandarin oriental in KL and then 2 nights in the shangri la also in KL.
The Shangri la was half the price but just as good if not a little better.

This was a fantastic hotel in Chang Mai
