Anyone here got a couple or more HD 7970's installed can help me out? :(

If so, how are you getting on with drivers?

I dont mind admitting I have had an absolute mare with mine for actually playing any games.

They benchmark like a dream, but to actually get the damn machine to run any games, no way, constant BSOD 116 errors from ATI driver.
Was tricky with 2 cards, 3 seems an absolute waste of space.

Very annoyed today. A week of my life wasted on these cards, and been installing Win 7 ultimate 64 / office / drivers / steam / origin etc from scratch since 7pm last night and thena nice fresh set of 12.2 pre release drivers and cap 3 profiles.

Result...

  • Batman wont even start. CTD.
  • Hawx 2 wont run. BSOD
  • Alan wake. BSOD at first animation.
  • COD MW3. Works on one screen, eyefinity... forget it.
  • Skyrim. Works in a window only. Full screen or eyefinity. Instacrash BSOD 116.

Syndicate seems to work ok... but hey, i dont have a ******* X BOX CONTROLLER! (Anyone whos got this game will understand.)

I have Battlefield 3, shift 2 and F1 2011 yet to install, along with my current favourite, Crysis 2. I dont hold out much hope at all.

I think I may scrap this £4000 PC and go and play on my PS3.

Any advice from folks who have been here and fixed this GREATLY appreciated.

some drivers are currently horrible for crossfire.
I would use and try older drivers to find one that works for you.
Ton of bugs is introduced currently which makes overclocking even funny for some.

You must have these drivers for 7970, 12.2 pre does not support 7970.

I have two XFX Black 7970`s and have had no problems in any games or applications.

It does mate...

Windows 7 and Windows® Vista® support for the AMD Radeon™ HD 7900 Series and AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series

  • Enables support for Windows 7 64-bit/32-bit and Windows Vista 64-bit/32-bit
  • Windows XP support will be made available in AMD Catalyst 12.4

Apparently not on you're PC lol, just try the other drivers you have nothing to lose, before you go insane!. This is what is working for me in 7970 X-Fire.
Plus you checked a XFX 1250W PSU enough, i thought they used around 300W+ each at full load, more if overclocked.

Already have. Installed it first with sapphires drivers, the .5, then later upgraded to the RC11 one and then the one I have now, and also briefly tried the new 8.96 before I ended up formatting and manual re-install of everything fresh with the 12.2 Pre release I have now.

All still just aggro... i was hopinga regular member might also have 3 and be able to say catragorically that his 3 run fine on XYZ system / driver.

Benchmarks damn well though. lol

I was looking on utube last night a tri/quad 7970 game benchmarks and they were using two PSU`s. Most because of not having enough PCI-E 6+2 Pin Connectors, but still they draw a lot of power.

I have the huge XFX 1250w Black edition. Should be more than enough. Especially with me running 2 solid state Hard Disks too.

does one card work as it should?

Yes, as does each on their own. Its purely cross / Tri fire that seems to be problematic. :(

Not had much time with my cards, but with the ref drivers they ran bf3 Eyefinity brill.. But from past exsperince 3870x2 quadfie, 6950 crossfire and 6990 quad all systems would bench very well but had loads of problems when trying to run games, I'm sure the 7970's will be the same and AMD just don't fix the bugs..

Thanks. Harsh but honest, just the sort of info I need I guess.
Looks like I better join HWBot to get some enjoyment out of this expenditure. LOL

I would give bf3 a try and see if that works as there is plenty of tri/quad fire videos in eyefinity. It looks like it plays great. The more games you can get running then the more i would say its maybe driver problems.

I just think theres to many ctd and blue screens to say its definately a driver issue.

Will be leaving work in 10 mins and trying just that tonight. Will report back!

The main problems i had when running tri 6950's was with eyefinity, but when on a single screen most of the game i played worked well, they would have a massive fps jump if running 3 cards when supported or they would drop below a single/dual card setup for some reason, then i would just run the 2 cards and all was fine for most the games.. but once you get them working well with whatever game it is they do rock, you just need to play with all the settings :s

I forgot when i had all my problems with tri 6950's i was getting system restarts under full gpu usage, im sure this was my psu been 1000w because when i would stress with 2 cards this would never happen, now i have the 7970's i run them on a xfx1250..

after all i have just put i have seen you have the ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z, does this have the NF200 chip?? i made loads of posts trying to get my old Asrock z68 extreme7 to run smooth with 2 or more cards but after months of trying gave up and all i could put it down to was the NF200 chip, anyway i got a cheap p67 board and put that in with the old windows drivers from my asrock board and bf2 would run so smooth unlike before.. sorry to go on lol.. hope this helps

i still have the MSI board, if needed pay the p&p and you can try it..
