I'm getting fed up with the stock apple in ear headphones and want some new ones, I've looked at the Beats Solo HD but after reading some reviews on head-fi, I've decided against them as their are much better for the money. I'm looking at spending £130 (£150 if needed) on a good pair, what do you recommend?

Shure SE315's should come in just under budget. Can't beat 315's for all round aural clarity and build quality at that price point - in my opinion of course!

My daughter loves her Shure 315's, and I wouldn't be parted from my SHure 535's :)

I've got the b&w C5's which work nicely with the iphone, my only criticism is that they are bit TOO bassy sometimes. A special mention for the cabling on them which IS actually tangle free unlike a of other brands that claim to be.

In this sort of price range (£100-£180) the main portable headphone contenders are:

Sennheiser HD25-1 II
V-Moda Crossfade M80
AiAiAi TMA-1
AKG K181DJ
Phiaton MS400

You could have a look at Sony Eggo

But imo, when spending this mucch on portables you have to buy IEMs (like Westone UM3x for example). With sound leakes and noise the most expensive and best sounding headphones will sound vastly inferior to IEMs that eliminate such problem pretty much completely.

Not everybody likes things in their ear canals. However, I agree with you and will only ever use custom IEMs from now on when out and about. Portables do make good ear muffs in very cold weather though!

The days of Etymotic ER4s IEMs raping ear canals with silicon triflanges are behind us- Westones with ultra soft Comply sleeves are extremely easy to insert, can be comfortably worn all day and have great noise insulation.

Cold weather - IEMs and a hat! warm, stealthy, supreme sound. IEMs are unbeatable for true portable use imo- in almost any situation/environment.
