Anyone live around East London?

Got myself a job as an IT Techy in Chigwell which is way too expensive/boring to live in so I'm having to look around for a room around April/May time (initially crashing at my aunts for awhile).

Was just wondering of any decent areas I should consider? Practically somewhere on the central line or within a 30 minute commute is ideal. Any thumbs up for Mile End/Bow/Bethnal Green?

Also am I being realistic in getting somewhere for £550pcm with bills included? Obviously in a flatshare.

Cheers peeps.

Stoke Newington was reasonably nice and reasonably cheap a few years ago. You can get train from Dalston to Stratford then the central line (good luck with the Olympics lol). I don't think any of the areas you mention are nice (Tower Hamlets = avoid).

I'd love to live in live in north but I don't really like the idea of paying £160 for a zone 1-4 card just to travel through when a zone 2-4 at £93 would do fine. Plus with my railcard I can get 34% off on offpeak fares which is the only time I'll ever need to go into central.

I've checked Spareroom a few times and it looks a lot more reliable than Gumtree but there's nothing there at the moment that fits my criteria.

Deptford bridge has a lot apartments.
I live at ONESE8, nice big gym and pool onsite for 550 PCM (Flat share). DLR directly outside the apartment.

I say it in a lot of London threads, but Greenwich should be high up on your list :D

Jubilee Line -> Stratford, then on to the Central line :D

Lovely, quiet area, not too expensive nice pubs, and so on.

- Trains to London Bridge, Cannon St, Waterloo, and Charing Cross every 10 minutes (10-15 minute journey time)
- DLR and Jubilee line both close to (or in) the town centre
- Several night busses go via Greenwich
- Lovely park, market, and indie shops, plus some nice pubs and bars in the town

Tower Hamlets is a bit of a lottery - but can be good. It can also be very bad so make sure you check out a block thoroughly 1st. My GF's sister lives in a modern block there and its pretty good.

Id avoid Bow, Bethnal Green & Mile End though.

Wapping is really nice but might be out of your price range.

Bethnal Green isn't bad at all and you're more likely to meet nicer/friendlier housemates as the majority of people in that area are <35 and commute into the City.

Stratford and beyond is a bit too far from where it all happens. I used to live in South Woodford which is also on the Central line. Lovely place to live but nothing really happened...if i was looking to settle down it would have been great.

That's the impression I got from Stratford/Leyton/Leytonstone, just a tad far out to enjoy central when I'd like to et al.

Hmm, just realised I can get the Overground from Highbury & Islington to Stratford and then onto Chigwell without ever going into zone 1, worth considering the area?

ive been looking on spareroom recently and have faith that if my job gets confirmed i wont have trouble findind somewhere to live

its a great site, albeit some ads are hilarious, ive been through quite a few which contain no pictures of the property but just 4 or 5 pictures of the current housemates on nights out????

Didn't think of that. H&I is certainly worth a look...even better than Bethnal Green but it might be a little bit more pricey. Plus you would be closer to Archway and your mates.

Not a bad commute either as the Central line is very quiet eastbound as everyone is heading west into the City.

Some people prefer the company rather than the house.

I would rather live in a run down place and have amazing flatmates. :p

I live in east London.

East London isn't the most scenic of places but there's plenty of interesting places to live. Bethnal Green is hipster central - plenty of pubs and clubs. Definitely the best place to be if you want to party. Mile End is quite posh towards Victoria Park and pretty rough in the opposite direction. Stratford has amazing transport links but gets very rough, very quickly as you move away from the Stratford. Leyton should be avoided at all costs but Leytonstone is quite nice but reasonably cheap. All of these places are served by night buses into central London.

It really depends on how central you want to be. In a houseshare, you can probably afford anywhere in east London (depending on what you consider to be acceptable accommodation). Living on the Central line is amazing - trains every 90 seconds and it goes everywhere useful in London.

look in areas like walthamstow or leyton/leytonstone. mile end...
Gumtree and spareroom.co.uk are the sites to look at.

I'm an east Londoner, and to Tunny I have to say some parts are nice and scenic. The Mile End/Bow/Bethnal Green area is a nice one, in my opinion (where I live).

As for 550 inclusive, yes, it's possible. Though it might not be that nice. My flatshare (which is fairly nice and good location) is about 600 including bills. I recently advertised a room and most people that came said it was on the cheaper end of the spectrum for nice places.

Victoria Park kicks ass.

I wouldn't really want to go further out east to be honest, it's all downhill from here.

Remember this in the summers rioting?

Barking - avoid like the plague. I live next door in Beckton, also avoid.
As a general rule of thumb, in London, if it's a nice area you'll pay more, if it's a bad area it'll be cheaper.

Nicest area in E London, hmmm, Hoxton perhaps? But still with grimey undertones and postcode gang wars.
