Hi all,

Im thinking of using my iphone on an upcoming long haul flight to watch videos on - can I assume they are ok to have swtiched on during flight?

I dont want to go to the trouble of getting some movies/tv on there only to be told to turn it off!!!

I am aware of aiplane mode - just hoping that flight attendants are also aware of it and what it means.

Cheers:cool:

In theory, it's absolutely fine. In practice, you've hit on the key snag and that's idiots. Be prepared for an argument, or just be prepared to keep an eye out and hide it every time someone comes past.

I was watching films on iPad the whole way travelling from London to Bangkok no one said anything. I wasn't the only one using electronic devices, guy behind me was on laptop. Just make sure your on airplane mode :)

I just throw it onto Airplane mode and keep my eye out for flight attendant incase. Some of them don't like it, but I really don't see the problem. I think it varies dependant on the airline - Some allow you to use it in Airplane mode, some don't.

Thanks for the input, Ill roll with it and see what happens.

As an aside, anyone use the handbrake program to get their dvd's onto their iphone? Im going to give it a go tomorrow, heard its good.

I've never had problems on long haul flights with BA, American or Virgin. The one time I was told to turn off my phone was on a BMI flight from Dublin to Heathrow.

I've never had to use it but I've only heard positive things about it. Apparently it has presets for products such as the iPhone and iPad so you can easily convert videos into the correct resolution/format etc.

On my recent trip to Hong Kong, the seats on the Cathay Pacific flights even have their own sockets now, so you can recharge your phone/devices. This was in economy class btw. It was convenient as I was able to to keep the power topped up on my iPhone while my 2yr old was watching cartoons on it.

Thats great to know, because I am taking that exact airline & flight! (then on to NZ afterwards).

I recently learned of the sockets being available on long hauls so Im excited - I am completely unable to sleep on aircraft so this is very handy for me.

As part of the announcement that they make about electronic devices on my last flight, they said that phones etc with an aeroplane/flight mode were permitted during the flight. Not sure if this is a common thing across other airlines?

As for Handbrake it is really good and easy to use!

It's quite common now, they just as that you have them switched off for take off and landing (during which I never have my phone or iPad switched off).

They only care about takeoff and landing these days, you're fine during the flight.

Cabin crew are generally hopeless - if you were using an iPod Touch they'd think it was a phone and tell you to turn it off yet if you were using a 3G iPad they'd probably leave you be

flew London to JFK last week and back yesterday they even announced that phones should be switched off or put into flight mode, they didn't say anything about me using my iPad or phone in flight, just need to turn off for landing/take off
