Good of him to admit it, and I don't think it's a ploy to get publicity either as I don't think he's that sort of bloke.

Does anyone here suffer with a similar mindset, feeling like they need to justify their existence by doing "worthwhile" stuff?

I suspect Jeremy Beadle was the same, going by some of his comments along the lines of his charity work being "entirely selfish".

Yes I loathe the **** as well. (kudos to him for his swim though) :D

Not sure where he's coming from but I do mentally try to offset bad things I've done personally. I suppose this must be like a guilty conscience x 1000.

Most of the great comedians were tragically messed up people. It's almost a prerequisite for being a comedian.

I struggle to understand how some of the greats (eg: Spike Milligan) continued to put up such a cheerful front (SM was open about it but still..) whilst being such a mess on the inside. That must take tremendous amounts of mental energy. :/

Or tremendous amounts of drink, cannabis, cocaine or any other drug available.

It's nice to think they had loads of mental energy or a brain that could be so energetic / quick fired etc.

Unfortunately - most of the great comedians from Britain & Ireland almost always had an addictive personality coupled with a love of whatever drug gave them the most creativity or happiness. The human brain is usually quite logical/methodical (or boring - as most would describe) - Throw in a few chemicals to confuse it's thought process - and you have a genius of some form.
