Hi, i was helping my friend fix his computer as something had broken, so through the process of elimination i rendered either the motherboard or the power supply broken, so we ordered a new motherboard, the
Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3 AMD 880G (Socket AM3+) DDR3 MicroATX Motherboard [GA 880GM-USB3]
and when i was installing it for him, i realised that it required an 8pin, not just a 4pin which the other motherboard was running off, and the power supply (being rather old) does not have an 8 pin cable, only a 4 and 6 which were remaining.
my question is, do i need to get a new one for him? and if so which one would you recommended?
Any feedback and advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

You can use the 4pin ATX in one half of the 8pin (it only fits in one part of it) The only effect is overclocking maybe reduced.

where abouts should i put the 4 pin, in this 8 pin slot?

If you look at the end of the plug you will see some of the pins are shaped and so it will only fit in one half of the 8pin plug, if you are forcing it in then you are doing it wrong.

well i tried what you said Stulid but now the whole thing doesnt even seem to try and turn on, simply nothing happens, so i assume the power supply cant run this new motherboard?

Are you sure the PSU works? try the paper clip trick on it?

Maybe it is so old you do need a new one.

if i was to get him some RAM also, assuming i will be getting that power supply, which RAM would you suggest for his system, (he uses it for gaming, and has a Phenom 11.

Have you done the following:
  1. Checked the the PSU itself is switched on? Most modern PSU's have a switch on them to enable/disable them.
  2. Is the connector for the power switch connected properly to the motherboard, if it is on wrong then it won't work.
  3. Is it powered on at the mains socket? Daft question I know but it is often the simple things that fix problems.
