Of all the TV series that shaped my childhood, i think this is the one that captivated me the most and in its absence i have missed. Left in its political views (animal rights, use of pesticides, care for nature etc) this cartoon gave an accurate portrayal of life in the real world, cutting through Disney's grotesque fantasy 'everything ends well' and dealing with complex issues, hardships, and ultimately death...

For reasons unknown, the BBC's UK division are stolidly ignoring any UK DVD release, but their German brethren are ahead of the curve. As of the 24th Feb 2012, all three series finally have their DVD releases so i decided to treat myself:

The box art and episode titling are in german, but the audio is provided in both german and english. I could not be more thrilled!

So, are there any other fans out there, and will you join with me in 'nudging' / 'encouraging' the BBC towards a proper UK release this series is due.

I was thinking about making a thread about the animals of farthing wood at some point :D I searched everywhere for DVDs, but couldn't find any anywhere - only VHS. I'll be buying these!

A friend of mine "obtained" a copy from the interweb (who even has a VHS player these days?), and I watched a few last week. I'd forgotten just how dark it is in places...

The episode I watched saw the animals debating whether to leave behind the mice who had just given birth, or wait for them before going on. In the end the decision is made for them by a bird of prey, which leaves the bloodied corpses of the baby mice impaled on a bush (cue scene of mother-mouse weeping frantically at the impaled corpses of her offspring). Gritty stuff for a kids show!

Eeeee - they don't make em like they used to!

I remember when...

hedgehog gets killed by a truck - a red smear is smooshed across the road

... traumatic for kids? Meh - why flower things up with rainbows & unicorns when this makes for such great entertainment and learning! ;)

I loved that series. I still have all the tapes and magazines somewhere but have no means to actually watch them. The bit with the butcher bird was horrific! I may have to buy these DVDs!

Jealous!

I have round-the-twist on DVD. :D

Want those now.. Ahhh nostalgia..

Ah classic, jealous returns. That show had an unforgettable theme tune, and for some reason i always remember the exploding mushrooms episode.

Actually, I do. The misses and i pick up classic Disney VHSs from charity shops for 50p or less :) Have only ever found TAOFW box set of videos 1-3.

Again, i cannot fathom the BBC boycotting a proper english release of this series hence why i am trying to raise awareness :)

Have you ever?

Ever felt this this?

Not as catchy as:

Nah-nah-nah, nanah, nahnahnah!
Nah-nah-nah, nanah, nahnahnah!
Nah-nah-nah, nanah, nahnahnah!
OoooooooooOOOOOOH NO SWEAT!

That's like Watership Down for the 90s.
I loved that. I think if I were fox I'd have just got rid of everyone else and just stayed in my hole, humping vixen. She was hot

The BBC weren't the original producers of the program, so it may not be their decision where it gets distributed. It was produced by the European Broadcasting Union, of which the BBC are no doubt influential members, but nevertheless it wasn't their own production.
