A lot. China isn't doing it for a laugh. The government there has its own way of running things, and it doesn't want past events to undermine it. The tighter a lid they can keep on things, the easier it is to control the current circumstances.

Try to avoid sort of thing that happened to a few Arab countries last year.

Reality is that the gap between rich and poor is massive and still increasing over there, land grabs are upsetting the rural population and several regions have ethnic groups who don't want to be ruled by the Chinese Govt in Bejing. They've got good reason to be paranoid because, in it's current form, the Chinese state faces some serious threats from it's own population.

SSL VPN worked for me when I was in China last year. IPSec VPN was a bit hit and miss (lot of dropped packets).
