Here's the story...

A friend of mine sold something on Ebay earlier, However since the sale he has received a bunch of mails from different bidders stating that some issue occurred and they could not place a bid.

Now he contacted Ebay (they where not very helpful) and they said to come to some agreement with the current purchaser about re-listing it. However the current winner understandably does not wish to do this as he won the item at a cheaper price (a fair bit too).

What can my friend do if anything besides honoring the sale?

I would just honour the sale, you should use the reserve function if you don't want it to go on the cheap.

What sort of prices are we talking?

That's true. However he has received several emails with regards to the problem of not being able to place a bid also one those potential bidders has even offered £3k more than what the item sold at.

But Ebay have essentially said that there was no problem and that he needs to organise a re-list with the buyer. If the buyer doesn't want a relist then there is nothing else to do apart from renege on the deal. In which case I imagine that the buyer will complain and raise a dispute which will potentially affect all future sales. He should have put on a reserve.

Tough one with it being £3k difference, what was the problem people were having trying to bid? surely if it was an Ebay problem then you should be within your right to cancel the auction and relist?

For £3K i wouldn't hesitate to contact the bidder who offered the most and strike a deal with them outside of ebay. Don't bother resisting it because you're just gonna get hit with another huge final value fee. Nobody cares about negative feedback anyway unless there is loads of it on a sellers account. Tell your friend to cancel the transaction and select the option "the item was lost or stolen"

Not a lot ebay or the highest official bidder can do about that.

They where trying to place bids but could not, several users had this issue. I would have thought ebay would be more helpful especially with the private messages from other users explaining they had experienced the same issue.

I asked my friend and he said that he is not bothered about negative feedback on his ebay account, as this is the first time he has used the account and could go ahead and create another.

There was a problem on Monday as I tryed to make payment for something and the payment would not go through. Then checked paypal later and the idiots took 4 payment for the samething! PayPal did say ebays payment system has/had crashed during the day???

+1 Sounds like the best option to avoid negative feedback and final value fee.

Yup sell outside of ebay if the highest bidder is willing. Why give them the final value fee if they aren't even any good at giving your friend support?
