Morning

Its been about 8-9 years since i last built myself a pc, its was an amd 2400xp with a gig of ram which i thought was massive lol.

Ive never built an sata pc only ide,and my last graphics card was agp, and im really out of touch with current specs.

I would like play some of the games from the last couple of years, i dont need the latest or most powerful graphics card, i want to be able to rip all my dvds/ BR's into mkv etc.

i like the idea of some mild overclocking on the sandybridge i5 ( i used to have a celeron 300A running at 450, back in the day.

A SSD hdd would be handy

I dont need a monitor as im hoping the board or graphics card has hdmi out so i can use my 55" sony, i do need an OS, keyboard and mouse.

I have no budget in mind just yet, im just after some ideas.

Many thanks Mark

Thanks for taking the time to spec me a system up

Ive got a few questions:

1 - would i notice much difference/fps between the GC you suggested and the 6850 which is £60 less
2- I dont know the difference between the different makes of memeory, just wondering why you chose that make

Thanks again Mark

This is a 6850 vs 6870 comparison - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/291?vs=290 - and more tests here - http://www.guru3d.com/article/vga-charts-spring-2011/

Its 8GB and its cheap, 1600MHz is perfect for a Sandybridge system, the next 8GB (2X4GB) kit is £47

The only thing I would argue against in stulid's system is the motherboard, you'd be better off getting something proven like this instead:

That Gigabyte board is really quite low end, just seeing the parallel port gives me flashbacks of the 1990's. :p

EDIT: this looks quite decent too:

Not sure how long the VRM's will last though with an overclocked 2500K as it isn't part of Gigabyte's Ultra Durable series, may not last long if they're routinely running 80C+.

I really wouldn't skimp on the motherboard as it's the main part of the whole system but who knows that board might be a hidden gem, the parallel port still makes me cringe though. :o
