can they take the money

if i gave a compnay my sort code and account number to set up a direct debit, is that all they need to take the money.

basically iv signed up with a company and now i dont like the look of them so dont want them taking money out the account.

its sometimes all thats needed to start a mobile phone contract or magazine subscribtion or similar stuff. I am certain i wouldnt be giving that information out to someone that had phoned me.
