Basically my housemates music keeps me up late at night. Now before you say i should tell him to turn it down, we made a gentlemans agreement to allow it as loud as we want up to about 1, and when i feel like it i play my music pretty loud, especially if i go out drinking come home and decide i want to shout some oasis songs with the lads. Sometimes if i have to get up early I'll want to go to bed at 10 or 11 and if he has loud music it'll be harder than i'd like to get to sleep.

As far as i can tell my only option is ear plugs. What are the best sort? Most comfortable? Is disposable better than washable ones? (i use my in-ear earphones every day for a couple of hours so i don't think disposable would be good if it compromises the comfort).

Also one of my mates a few years ago (for some reason, really can't remember the back story) showed us some ear plugs down the pub he got in london. They were like a rubber putty type material and they mold to your ear as you push them in so you always get a perfect fit. I can't find these anywhere on the web though.

Tl;dr = Is there any type of ear plug you recommend.

Thanks for recommendation. How long would 10 pairs last? Is it one use only or can you use them a number of times? Can you tell when they need chucking?

Yep, also had to use them when my uni accommodation was next to a street with a pub. After suffering from middle of the night rugby song concerts I just got some generic plugs from the chemist and slept soundly for the whole year (not in one go:)). Brands etc are probably not important as in the end you are paying a for 3 grams of foam in a shape of ear plugs.

I have the same problem. I got this type and they work great. You roll them in your fingers and put in your ear and then they expand to fill the ear canal.

They block out the sound great, although your do then hear your own breathing quite loudly, but you get used to it.

How much!

Get to your local Cromwell or Screwfix and get some of these

Same as above, they are sponge. You roll them and insert them. I use them all the time when sleeping through the day time after night shifts. Like Mark says you hear you heart beat/breathing but that doesnt seem to be a problem for me.

I've tried quite a few different types of earplugs and none seem to do the job quite as well as a pair of in ear headphones :o Even without music playing they do the job although i do generally put something calming on my ipod

I prefer these -

I've used the laser lite ones and other softer foam types and they're ok but I find I have difficulty getting them right into my ear. The type in my link are a bit tougher and take longer to expand back into the original shape so you have plenty of time to position them.

I use them when my sister and her family stop, can't hear a thing when the kids are wreaking havoc downstairs at the crack of dawn :D.

Those are different. The ones I linked to are a smooth closed cell material and compress very small then expand to their normal size inside the ear canal.

Also, that isn't where I got mine from, I just searched ebay for lasrer lite ear plugs. You can get them a lot cheaper, there are loads of sellers selling them.

You can use them quite a few times. Search for laser lite earplugs on ebay as there are cheaper sellers, I just found the first link to show the type I meant. You can get them individually wrapped without the string, which I guess would be better for sleeping anyway.

Thanks for all the link! I've gone with the cheaper ones Josh recommended, a pack of 50 pairs

I'll let you know how i get on with them.

Just make sure you roll them into a really tight point at one end and don't be afraid to jam them right inside your ear.

You'll know when they're in right as it's almost like being under water :D

Here you go, there's a video for everything and they're the exact plugs!

I recommend Macks pillowsoft ear plugs personally. They're made of a squidgy gel, you soften them up by rolling them in your fingers for a few seconds then they are pressed onto your ear. You aren't meant to actually insert them into the ear canal. They work really well. The instructions say to only use them for a day or three but being the pig I am, I tend to make each pair last 2 weeks or so until they lose their "tackyness". You can buy them in bulk... if you look around you can get them pretty cheaply. I think the last lot I got (5 packs of 6 pairs each) came from that usual auction site and cost around £20.

Paul.

I used to use the laser lite type in the datacentre I used to manage.

I prefered them to the type Mr Joshua recommended for exactly the opposite reason, they expand pretty quickly so I could feel if they were sat right.

Couldn't comment on longevity though as we used to throw them away at the end of the day.

I've tried all but the Superdrug ones in this thread, I use them when I go clay pigeon shooting. They block out the sound of a shotgun a few inches from my face well enough, they should do the same for music next door. ;)

I use these, although I got them a lot cheaper so look around for best price!

I wear mine every night and change pairs about once a week.
